The Department of Laboratory Medicine serves as a regional resource for clinical laboratory services required for patient care, research and educational programs in laboratory medicine. The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology department has an outstanding opportunity for a weekend/evening shift, part-time, MESSENGER DRIVER.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Drives a University vehicle to transport laboratory specimens, laboratory reports, supplies and other designated materials between UWMC and medical facilities and laboratories within Washington State.
Works with bio hazardous specimens, including tissues and fluids, which may be contain viruses or other infectious particles or microorganisms. May work near contagious patients. Must be vigilant about risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens through needle stick or spillage.
Adheres to “Universal Precaution” procedures at all times when handling or transporting biohazardous materials.
Maintains integrity of specimens being transported with regard to specimen temperature, intactness of containers/packaging, and absence of specimen loss or incorrect delivery.
Prepares and gathers lab supplies and related material to be delivered to client locations.
Performs assigned route in appropriate amount of time.
Exercises independent judgment in determining ability to accommodate clients’ requests for additional service within the assigned shift.
Maintains accurate records of route stops and specimens transported.
Knows UW Fleet Services rules and regulations and adheres to them at all times.
Keeps assigned University vehicle clean, and fuel tank sufficiently filled as per protocol. Participates in and supports UW Fleet Services vehicle maintenance program.
Participate in and supports quality assessment and improvement activities.
Receptive to new ideas and procedures.
Adapts to changes in route and schedule as necessary.
Open to receiving direction and asks for assistance when needed.
Will use digital devices such as computers and smart phones regularly.
Responds promptly to calls or texts.
Accesses Workday and other UW online resources for personal and employment data, training or other assignments, and education opportunities.
Keeps passwords up to date and checks UW email once per week at a minimum.
Teaches and demonstrates tasks and shares job knowledge with trainees as assigned.
Maintains a customer service focus and service attitude in all situations encountered. Communicates in a cooperative and professional manner with team members and client contacts in the medical facilities for which courier service is provided.
Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a valid Washington State vehicle operator’s license.
DESIRED
Safe driving record as evidenced by provision of a minimum 3-year driving abstract.
Professional driving experience.
Experience handling bio-hazardous laboratory specimens and familiarity with universal precautions.
Experience with customer service relations.
Demonstrated success working independently with minimal supervision.
