Patient Monitor Technician

The Patient Monitor Technician (PMT) is responsible for continuous video monitoring for patient safety as an additional tool in the plan of care for patients at high risk for falls, confusion, impaired mobility, etc. The Patient Monitor Technician is also responsible for monitoring the continuous oximetry system for patients as indicated.
He/she must demonstrate the ability to work cooperatively and communicate effectively with coworkers, staff, and patients/family. This team member must demonstrate a thorough understanding of the monitoring process and effective, efficient use of the camera monitoring equipment and the continuous oximetry monitoring system. The PMT works under the supervision of the Patient Care Director and RN.

Qualifications:
High School Diploma or Equivalent preferred.
One year of constant observation experience preferred.
Responsibilities:
Ensures that patient information is entered in EHR. i.e.: Note field is accurate, language etc.
Reports off to oncoming staff regarding patient and their status; includes notable behaviors to be watching for with the patient, and any other notes in relation to the patient.
Ensures constant patient oximetry monitoring prior to leaving station for any reason such as shift change or meal break
Monitors patients and attempts to verbally redirect patient, encouraging them to stay in the bed, though 2-way audio.
Understands and proficiently uses the continuous oximetry monitoring system: admit to system, sets alarms/verifies parameters (if appropriate), discharge from system.
Document patient’s activities at least every hour and as needed.
Assists nursing supervisor (or Charge nurse of each unit in the absence of a nursing supervisor) in the process identifying patients that could potentially have continuous video monitoring discontinued in the event another patient has a higher need. If one can be discontinued, PMT keeps a list of additional patients (wait list) that meet criteria that can be initiated right away.

Notifies the nursing supervisor when there is a monitor not in use so it can be used to monitor another patient from the waiting list.
