Job Description : Position Summary: The position of Public Safety Officer supports the mission of the Department of Public Safety to foster and maintain a safe and secure environment for its students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Public Safety Officers will be required to execute a number of comprehensive and integrated security measures and countermeasures and must be able to adapt physically and psychologically to the changing needs and priorities of the Department of Public Safety and the University. Qualifications: Required Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent, and NYS Security Guard Registration.
Required Experience:
1+ years experience in a position or activity where integrity and reliability were essential to carrying out the duties, or the equivalent.
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Ability to understand and follow safety procedures. Ability to detect problems and report information to appropriate personnel. Ability to read and comprehend policies and incident reports, and write/enter reports into a records management system. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to gather data, compile information, prepare reports, and leverage security related technologies. Security Officers must possess and maintain New York State security guard registration throughout the course of their employment, including participation in, and successful completion of, any legally mandated training, including but not limited to on-the- job training and/or annual in-service requirements. They must also possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted driver’s license Working Conditions: Security Officers may be exposed to the attendant discomfort or elements of serving outdoors for prolonged periods of time in inclement weather conditions, including walking or standing for extended periods while on duty, climbing and descending stairs, and foot patrolling. Physical Requirements: Applicants must be in good health and must have and retain physical strength, including the ability to lift items up to 50 lbs., physical stamina, and agility, visual and auditory acuity to perform the essential responsibilities of his position. Applicants must be able to operate departmental equipment, including radios, use hands repetitively, and have the ability to listen and communicate calmly, effectively, and courteously in both emergency and non-emergency situations.
