Position : Volunteer Engagement Manager

This position leads efforts to engage the community as dynamic agents who help support the zoo’s mission. This position is responsible for establishing strong internal and external partnerships that advance the zoo’s strategic goals, generate revenue, and provide access to mission-based programs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following
Purposefully seek to engage broader and more diverse communities in the volunteer program, creating meaningful experiences that reinforce a volunteer’s connection to the natural world and provide opportunities to engage in advocacy and action.
Manage all aspects of the volunteer program including recruitment, training, communication, placement, recognition, appreciation, retention, and data management.
Ensure volunteer policies are in accordance with zoo policies and procedures and volunteer management best practices.
Oversee development and distribution of promotional materials, blogs, reports, statistics, publications, communications/interpretive materials, and other promotional and support materials.
Manage cross-departmental program development and/or implementation teams.
Integrate diversity, equity, and inclusion practices and principles in all aspects of work, including but not limited to, the evaluation of programs and projects, as well as the development and management of people and partnerships.
Stay informed of new trends and research in behavior change, volunteer engagement, and universal design and inclusion practices.
Assist with grant proposals, reports, and participate in fundraising and donor cultivation efforts as directed.
Serve on the department’s management team and work with other managers and supervisors to ensure smooth, effective operations and programs to meet the departmental and zoo strategic plan goals.
Develop and manage program budgets, expenses, and financial records.
Develop and strengthen internal and external partnerships.
Represent the department and zoo at internal and external meetings and conferences, which serve to strengthen the zoo’s position as a leading conservation education organization.
Manage a staff team including recruiting and hiring; developing staff work plans; conducting annual staff evaluations; effectively training, developing, mentoring and coaching employees; addressing staff disciplinary concerns and maintaining personnel records. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s Degree in conservation, biology, science education, community engagement, or related field of study and six (6) or more years related experience; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Washington State Driver’s License.
Demonstrated computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Teams, and the ability to work with customized databases and technology.

Ability to work with the public, including diverse populations and people of all ages and abilities.

Excellent written and verbal communications skills with the ability to adapt communication based on audience and purpose with inclusivity. Ability to disseminate information effectively to appropriate levels.
Ability to work in an extremely fast-paced, ever-changing environment, and manage multiple projects with competing demands while maintaining a commitment to excellence. Ability to quickly and methodically adjust priorities when needed.
Ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team, within diverse teams and environments.
Ability to listen, give and receive feedback in a productive and professional manner. Able to translate vision into planning and implementation.
Ability to identify and suggest changes that promote positive impacts with a lens for diversity and inclusion.
Ability to evaluate problems and to effectively solve them in a timely manner, while responding to concerns with empathy and inclusivity.
Ability to work a non-standard/flexible schedule, including weekends, evenings, and holidays.
PREFERRED SKILLS
Ability to speak a language in addition to English.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position may be required to lift up to 35 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to a typical office environment and/or outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is typically moderate.
Pay: $70,000/year, plus benefits
REQUIREMENTS
COVID-19 Vaccination:
As of November 24, 2021, employees working on or accessing zoo grounds are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. If hired, you will be required to submit proof of vaccination by your first day of employment.
