Position : Assistant Guide Apprentice – Bear Viewing

Job Description : Job Summary:
Under the supervision of the KBBC Lodge Manager, the Assistant Guide Apprentice will learn all aspects of operating a successful remote bear viewing operation. This position will work on-site at the Kodiak Brown Bear Center (KBBC) facilities located on Camp Island on Karluk Lake on Kodiak Island.

Essential Functions include, but are not limited to: (Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.)
Keeping the KBBC campus area clean of debris and safe of hazards.
Maintain and clean all guide equipment and materials.
Understand and comply with all bear viewing protocols procedures as defined by the Kodiak Brown Bear Center’s standard operating policies.
Recognize and identify different species of trout and salmon.
Operate and use a Satellite phone, VHF Radio.
Plan and prepare lunch for fishing clientele on riverside, while conducting sport fishing guided activities.
Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Ability:
Skilled and able to provide a high level of verbal communication, as demonstrated by the effective “customer service” interface with clients, KWA and Koniag, Inc. staff.
Ability to work in remote setting for weeks at a time, all days of the week and holidays.
Ability to successfully complete Company provided training specific to the operations at KBBC, as demonstrated through written and practical examination.
General mechanical experience and ability.
Ability to maintain a clean and groomed appearance at all times and wear required KBBC guide apparel and uniform.
Able and willing to be trained and learn new skills.
Able to follow directions.
Able to work as a member of a team and independently.
Able to read, interpret, and follow written & verbal instructions.
Must be able to travel and live for extended periods of time in a remote location.
Must be able to work for extended periods in all types of weather conditions.
Must have good eye-hand coordination, physical fitness, and a good sense of balance.
Must be able to move weight-bearing materials and equipment on uneven terrain.
Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
HS Diploma or GED equivalent.
Must have a sound and basic to intermediate knowledge of bear safety protocols and equipment, fly fishing, rods, equipment and tackle.
Must have intermediate to expert knowledge and experience with firearms.
Must be able to pass a background check, required to carry a firearm while conducting guide operations.
Successfully pass a firearms safety training[SS1] , practical field demonstration and charging bear course.
Must have prior experience working in a remote construction environment and experience in maintenance operations of remote facilities and its equipment.

Additional Requirements:
Must be able to obtain and uphold these licenses and certifications:
CPR and First Aid certifications and have the ability to obtain a Wilderness First Responder certification.
Office Location and Travel:
The incumbent would report to the City of Kodiak and be responsible for his/her own travel costs to/from and living expenses while in the city of Kodiak. KWA will provide travel to and from Kodiak to Camp Island. While on Camp Island, lodging and food are provided by KWA. KWA maintains internet, phone, showers, power, cooking facilities and diesel heat at Camp Island.
Working Environment & Conditions
The work environment requires incumbent to be able and willing to work in all types of weather conditions and varied temperatures. Must be able to travel to Koniag land holdings and assets by small boats, airplanes and all-terrain vehicles. Work will be performed mostly outdoors, and under a variety of settings, such as but not limited to, a lodge environment, loading dock, remote field and bear viewing platforms, leaving the incumbent exposed to the elements for long periods of time. Position requires incumbent to be able to stand or sit for extended periods of time on even and uneven terrain and uphold good vision and hearing. The incumbent must be able to lift, move and carry up to 50 pounds over uneven terrain, game trails and ground conditions. Noise level is moderate to high. Position requires that incumbent be able to use the five senses (sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch) and be able to distinguish colors.
