Job Description : The Patient Access Specialist (PAS) is often the first point of contact for our patients and therefore must represent our organization with the highest standard of customer service and compassion while performing all duties in a manner consistent with our mission, vision and standards of performance.The PAS will facilitate all components of the patients’ entrance into our surgical hospital. This may include scheduling, registration, insurance verification and authorization, patient cost estimates, patient financial counseling, payment plan negotiations and collecting patient financial responsibilities prior to their procedure.The PAS will be responsible for conducting professional patient interviews to ensure the most accurate patient data is obtained and populated into the patient record. Therefore, the PAS must have an exceptional attention to detail and maintain knowledge and competence with insurance carriers.The PAS will be successfully trained in our EHR, practice management platform, and insurance eligibility software to ensure they can excel in their job performance.Essential DutiesWelcome patients and family members to the facility in a compassionate and courteous mannerAssist patients to nursing units by providing directions, personal escort and medical mobility assistance (e.g., wheelchairs) when applicableConduct professional patient interviews to obtain patient demographic and insurance informationRegister patients in the practice management softwarePerform insurance verification/eligibility and obtain authorizations when applicableReview insurance verification/eligibility and authorizations obtained from Revenue Cycle TeamPrepare patient cost estimates and review the patient’s financial responsibilityCollect the patient determined financial responsibility prior to the patient’s procedureProvide patient financial counseling to discuss payment options and conduct payment plan negotiations if neededPrepare patient accounts the day before surgeryPerform cashiering responsibilities such as reconciling the daily intake money report, deposit checks and/or cash in the bank when applicable, post payments to the patient’s accountEnsure patient intake forms are completed and scanned into the patient’s accountCreates split accounts when applicableAnswer and respond to patient inquiries regarding admittanceAbility to work in a fast-paced environmentDependable to work early shifts with flex time off in accordance to surgery scheduleAbility to respond to a high volume of emailsPositive contribution to a valued team approachAssist HIM department when neededOther duties as assignedQualifications_ High School Diploma/GED; Associates Degree in Healthcare Administration preferred_1 year experience in a healthcare, patient access and patient accounting role preferred_ Certified Healthcare Access Associate (CHAA) preferred _Key Success SkillsRelationship Building – Gain trust and build relationships with patients and providersCommunication – Communicate in a clear, articulate, and professional mannerInterpersonal and Customer Relations – Be a good listener and interact with patients and providers in a professional, pleasant and respectful manner, exhibit exceptional customer servicePlanning/Organization – Prioritize work activities, use time efficiently and work through projects in a self-motivated mannerAdaptability – Adapt to rapid changes in the work environment, manage competing demands and able to deal with frequent change, delays or unexpected eventsProblem-solving – Identify and resolve problems in a timely manner; gather and analyze information skillfully; able to apply independent judgment on a regular basis in making decisionsTime Management – Use time effectively in an unsupervised fashion; able to complete projects in a timely manner.Computer – Efficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook. Develop strong navigational skills in the insurance eligibility, patient cost estimate, practice management / EMR systemsFinance / Accounting – Provide patient financial counseling in a respectful manner. Strong business office accounting knowledge in order to collect, process and post patient payments accurately along with ability to reconcile daily cash drawer and deposit money.Working ConditionsWork is performed in a hospital or surgery center environment with standard medical equipment available.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
