The New York State Office of the Attorney General’s (OAG) Public Information & Correspondence Unit (PICU) is seeking a

skilled communicator to join its team as a Plain Language Specialist. The PICU is responsible for processing all the non-
legal correspondence that is received by the OAG. Additionally, the PICU develops, maintains and distributes more than

a hundred publicly available educational and outreach materials in multiple languages. The Plain Language Specialist

position is located in Albany and reports to the Director of PICU.

As one of the largest and highest-profile public sector law firms in the country, the OAG is engaged in impactful and

innovative legal work that advances equal justice and protects the rights and interests of New York State and its citizens.

In support of this mission, the OAG is currently redesigning its website to improve the accessibility and readability of its

public-facing content. The initial focus of the Plain Language Specialist will be to work in coordination with stakeholders

to draft and edit the language for the public-facing portions of the OAG’s new website and to apply plain language

standards/principles to the content development process.

Responsibilities of the Plain Language Specialist will include but not be limited to the following:
Overseeing the language that is used on the public facing portions of the OAG’s website, including drafting text
and reviewing, editing and revising existing content;
Supporting the OAG’s messaging, branding, educational and community outreach efforts by drafting and
reviewing memos, notices and other collateral materials/documents, including working closely with attorneys to

convert legal content into plain language;
Acting as the OAG’s in house expert on plain language standards/principles, including remaining current on best
practices and effectively communicating and implementing these updates;
Developing agency-wide plain language guidelines that can be used by OAG staff when drafting public-facing
written communications to improve reader accessibility and comprehension;
Preparing trainings for staff to ensure the OAG’s plain language guidelines are consistently applied across
multiple disciplines and subject matter;
Fostering productive and collaborative relationships with a variety of stakeholders and subject matter experts,
including the Press Office, Intergovernmental Affairs, Constituent Services, the Web Team and attorneys,

managers and other professional staff throughout the OAG’s bureaus and regional offices; and
Tracking, leveraging and sharing metrics to evaluate public-facing communications for their compliance with the
OAG’s plain language guidelines to drive best practices and make recommendations for improvement where

needed.

Qualifications for the Plain Language Specialist are as follows:
A minimum of three (3) years of work experience in a relevant field such as communications, marketing and
public relations or affairs;
Prior work experience in a law firm or the courts system and experience with government communications and
community-focused writing is desirable;
A demonstrated track record of producing high-quality written content across various media while effectively
utilizing federal plain language standards/principles;
Excellent writing, proofreading and verbal communications skills and the ability to communicate complex
information clearly and accessibly to diverse audiences;
Strong relationship management skills with the ability to tactfully engage with a wide range of stakeholders; and
Keen coordination, project planning, project management and problem-solving skills, and the ability to remain
organized and balance multiple priorities.
The annual salary for this position is $72,966. We offer a comprehensive New York State benefits package,
