The diesel electric propulsion system operation utilizes an integrated power plant concept, providing 5750hp of propulsion power through frequency drives and a/c main motors to two fully azimuthing z-drives. The R/V SIKULIAQ is a 261-foot oceanographic research ship capable of bringing scientists to the ice- choked waters of Alaska and the polar regions. We are currently accepting applications for a QMED. This position requires at-sea experience and familiarity with oceanographic research ship operations in support of ocean research, with a primary emphasis in high altitudes.
Job Overview: The QMED (Oiler) will assist with watch standing, installation, operation, maintenance and repair of shipboard equipment and systems.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Under general supervision of the Engineering Department Staff, the QMED will assist with watch standing, installation, operation, maintenance and repair of shipboard equipment and systems. The QMED will perform other duties as defined by a ship’s senior officer during emergency situations and drills, facilitate and support the scientific mission of each voyage, and comply with, participate in, and promote the vessel’s safety management program. The QMED will perform general Oiler duties and/or those of the QMED watchstander, may stand security watches in port or other duties as directed by the Senior Engineering Staff. Cleaning of engine department areas as directed.
Required Skills and Experience:
Strong skills as a QMED. Knowledge of typical QMED duties and ability to perform accordingly. Ability to be at sea for extended periods. Ability to travel from home to ports of call, both domestic and foreign. Operational understanding of fuel oil bunkering procedures and emergency response, safe usage of basic machine and hand tools, basic math and computer skills. Two years of experience working in the engine room of a ship, at least one year while holding a MMC with QMED endorsement or higher. Experience with a wide range of vessel systems and their proper operation. Experience with and practice of good safety procedures.
Knowledge of basic good seamanship practices (knots, line-handling, general shipboard maintenance and care,
preparation/preservation of steel surfaces, operation of deck equipment, winches, etc. Ability to work with a diverse group of people including scientists, ship’s crew and technicians. Prefer experience on newer vessel propulsion systems and equipment. Mechanical operational and maintenance decisions, as required to safely and efficiently operate modern marine mechanical systems and equipment.
Qualified applicants must possess the following: U.S. Passport; U.S. Coast Guard Qualified Member Engine Department (QMED), Able Seafarer Engine, Basic Safety Training, Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) issued by Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and experience to perform the duties expected aboard an ocean going research vessel.

Applicants will be required to provide documentation of participation in a random drug testing program for at least 60 of the preceding 185 days, did not have any positive test results, and did not refuse to take a required test. If not under employment, where a random drug testing program exists, the applicant shall provide a completed test indicating they are free of illegal substance abuse, when requested by Seward Marine Center, prior to employment. Testing will be for the presence of cocaine, opiates, marijuana (THC), amphetamines and PCP (phencyclidine). Testing will be in accordance with the Department of Transportation Program and testing shall be in accordance with United States Coast Guard Drug and Alcohol Testing guidelines outlined in the Federal Register 46 C.F.R. 4, 5, and 16.

This is a full-time, Grade 75, 12-month position complete with a competitive salary and UA employee benefits package. Term Position:
