Position : Real Time Energy Trader

Job Description : Tacoma Power is seeking a Real-Time Energy Trader (RTET). Tacoma RTETs optimize our resource portfolio by scheduling Tacoma’s generation and power supply contracts, along with energy purchases and sales to ensure that the power supply obligations to Tacoma’s customers are met in the most economical and cost efficient manner. The RTET seeks out real-time market opportunities and creates innovative transactions that maximize the economic benefits from hourly market fluctuations. Tacoma’s RTETs work closely with the System Power Dispatchers in the operation of Tacoma’s generating resources.

Responsibilities include:
Evaluate system surplus or deficit situations and implement transactions in real-time to maintain load/generation/interchange balance.
Perform market energy price surveys and evaluate the results for differing points of delivery or points of receipt.
Formulate, study, and prioritize all possible real-time operating strategies with a goal to maximize economic benefits in the wholesale markets.
Perform economic analysis to determine the optimum real-time scheduling of Tacoma’s owned and contracted generation resources in conjunction with Tacoma’s power supply portfolio to maximize the value of our resource portfolio.
Work with System Power Dispatchers in efficiently scheduling Tacoma’s generating resources within all appropriate constraints, including economic, hydrological, fisheries, reserves, and regulatory requirements.
Negotiate, execute, schedule, and document power sales and purchases and/or ancillary products with marketplace participants.
Acquire necessary transmission reservations from transmission path operators or owners using the Open Access Same-Time Information System (OASIS), or equivalent.
Collaborate in a team environment to plan the efficient operation of the power supply system.
Establish and sustain excellent business relationships with marketplace participants.
Reason and respond quickly to a variety of situations using tact, patience, and courtesy. Perform at a high level under limited supervision.
Perform detailed work with a high degree of accuracy while under pressure.
Take initiative to solve problems.
Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.
Standard rotating shift (up to 12-hours per work period) covering all 24 hours a day and all days of the year.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (Engineering, Economics, Business, or related field)
2+ years of experience working in power marketing or utility operations. Utility operations, marketing, or economics experience may be substituted for years of education.
Desired Qualifications

Knowledge of energy markets and market fundamentals (prefer experience with CAISO and Western EIM)
Excellent analytical, communication and writing skills
Self-starter able to work effectively without direct supervision in a complex, fast-paced, stressful environment
Ability to work rotating 12-hour shifts
Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and MS Office suite and energy trading & risk management software.
NERC Balance & Interchange Operator certified within 12 months of appointment.
