Position Location: Depending on the nature of the program or department, this position may require regular travel between USF campuses and/or day and overnight travel to client location. This position is off Campus and performs work in the SW Region of Florida. (Charlotte, Citrus, Collier, DeSoto, Glades, Hardee, Hendry, Hernando, Highlands, Hillsborough, Lee, Manatee, Monroe, Pasco, Pinellas, Sarasota, and Sumter)

ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:

The Institute for School Reform (ISR) in the College of Education is a nationally recognized research and training center that provides technical assistance to school districts and other service delivery leaders throughout the United States. The ISR’s $20 million budget is derived from grants from federal, state, and private sources. It is the mission of the ISR to implement research-based and innovative practices in Florida schools through the use of technical assistance, training, coaching, and program evaluation. The ISR, through various projects, seeks to help enable all schools in the state of Florida to provide a safe, effective, and efficient environment; to continuously improve the academic and social/emotional growth of ALL students; and to engage families and communities in the schooling process. The School Improvement Support Plan (SISP) program was adopted by the FDOE to improve student performance in the State’s most struggling schools. State School Improvement Support Plan teams work with school and district leaders to identify school needs, set goals for performance, build staff capacity to implement effective educational practices, and evaluate progress toward improved student outcomes. School Improvement Support Plan team members work closely with the Florida Department of Education Bureau of School Improvement to implement the School Improvement Support Plan program across the state.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The School Improvement Coordinator promotes, develops, coordinates, supports, and evaluates the implementation and success of Florida’s School Improvement Support Plan program in assigned regional schools and districts. The School Improvement Coordinator works collaboratively with the Regional Team and FDOE to coordinate efforts and provide appropriate services to ensure a cohesive, sustained, intensive, and classroom-focused approach that is rigorous, engaging, and relevant for students. The position is assigned to select Correct II and Intervene schools by the Regional Executive Director and, in conjunction with school and district leadership, takes ownership of the reading process at assigned schools. The position holds districts and schools accountable for providing quality reading instruction and intervention by providing a non-threatening, open, professional, and collaborative work relationship with district-level reading personnel and school-site reading coaches to ensure successful outcomes for the goals and objectives of the program.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Promotes and supports implementation of Florida’s Differentiated Accountability Plan. Works collaboratively with the assigned Regional Team and with FDOE to coordinate efforts and provide appropriate services to ensure a cohesive, sustained, intensive, and classroom-focused approach that is rigorous, engaging, and relevant for students. Remains current and informed of state and federal educational legislation, State Board of Education mandates, and Florida Department of Education (FDOE) policies and procedures.

Develops school-based Literacy Leadership Teams at assigned schools. Trains and mentors reading coaches at assigned schools; assists non-reading and language arts teachers with incorporating reading strategies and benchmarks. Trains and mentors coaches and teachers at assigned schools with the use and implementation of the Florida Assessment for Instruction. Provides training in lesson study.

Monitors and supports the implementation of reading programs, strategies, curriculum, intervention, and instruction at assigned schools, including recommendations from the Instructional Review (if applicable) and strategies identified in the School Improvement Plan (SIP). Works with assigned groups to ensure successful alignment and implementation of school and district improvement plans with the Comprehensive K-12 Research-Based Reading Plan, particularly those with the goal of creating high performing secondary schools.

Collects and analyzes quantitative and qualitative data to evaluate program effectiveness; provides feedback and guidance to assigned schools to improve program implementation, including differentiating instruction and intervention for struggling students within the content of expertise. Reports all activities on the online database by the required deadlines.

Conducts instructional reviews in selected schools. Provides follow up assistance and professional development in schools and districts based on areas of need to address students’ specific reading deficiencies and interventions. Provides Content Area Reading-Professional Development (CAR-PD) at assigned schools. Remains current on the latest research to improve student achievement in the respective content area.

Performs other duties as assigned.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM:

This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in Communication, Education, Adult Education, or equivalent field with one year of experience in a professional training position; or a Master’s degree in the same field. Certain grants and programs may also have specific education and/or certification requirements specific to the subject matter area of the program.

PREFERRED:

Master’s degree and five years successful teaching and/or coaching experience.
