Job Description : Position Purpose/SummaryThe Telecom Technician will provide basic installation, testing, maintenance and repair of telecommunication facilities and equipment, such as, but not limited to, COE, CATV, OPE, OSP, buildings and vehicles in a safe and proper manner set forth by company policy and without constant supervision.Primary Duties & Responsibilities1.Uses company computer programs, as required.2.Installs and maintains basic telecommunication services.3.Installs pedestals, protectors and groundings.4.Performs routine office maintenance and/or repairs on equipment (such as, batteries, alarms, air filters and general fluid levels) and following procedures for maintaining site logs and records.5.Locates telecommunication cable.6.Splices and repairs new and existing telecommunication cable.7.Climbs poles & towers to install or repair telecommunication lines and facilities.8.If applicable, troubleshoots from the pedestal to the customer television set, including changing out tap plates and cutting in taps where necessary for a new installation.9.Troubleshoots malfunctioning telecommunication cables using testing devices such as meters and analyzers, to locate and the diagnose nature of the problem.10.Performs basic installation, testing and maintenance of carrier equipment.11.Maintains various types of customer premises equipment, such as, but not limited to, Key System Units (KSU).12.If applicable, changes out Cable Television (CATV) headend equipment, such as, but not limited to, receivers, video ciphers, modulators and scramblers.13.Reads and understands construction staking sheets and cut sheets to carry out design plans.14.Reads and understands various types of schematic drawings.15.Installs telecommunication equipment such as, but not limited to, repeater housing’s, load coils, and digital loop carrier (DLC) housings.16.Demonstrates the technical skills necessary for installing, operating and maintaining central office equipment (i.e., line cards)17.Understands trunk signaling protocols, CO routing, screening (such as Class, NLH, etc.), trunk and line level/impairment specifications and tests.18.If applicable, troubleshoots from the house to the headend, such as, but not limited to, amplifiers, line extenders, bridges and power insertions.19.If applicable, installs, tests, maintains and troubleshoots advanced headend equipment including satellite reception, using carious test equipment.20.Performs and interprets extensive diagnosis tests on digital switching equipment.21.Installs, tests, maintains and repairs advanced telecommunication services, such as, but not limited to, DDS, XDSL, and T1.22.Thoroughly understands and performs the installation, operations, maintenance, testing and provisioning of all Central Office switching equipment from various manufacturers.23.Thoroughly understands and performs the programming and development of specific routing, translations, screening functions of both line and trunk operations in the Central Office data base.24.Thoroughly understands and performs the installation, operations, maintenance, testing and provisioning of Wide Area Network equipment, protocols and services, such as but not limited to, Frame Relay and ATM, provisioning of IDLC (integrated digital loop carrier), provisioning of Fiber Optic systems and equipment such as, OC-1, OC-3 OC-12 and Sonet.25.Thoroughly understands and performs the installation, operations, maintenance, testing and provisioning of computer network protocols and equipment, such as but not limited to Routers, Bridges, Servers, Ethernet, TCP-IP, 1PX, SMTP, POP3, ARP, EGIRP, SNMP.26.Operates equipment such as, but not limited to, backhoes, trenchers, cable plows and dozers.27.Installs, operates and maintains radio systems, such as, but not limited to, microwave, UFH, VFH and BETRS where applicable.28.Reads and understands industry standards and group documents, such as, but not limited to, Bellcore, NECA, USTA and ITU.29.Completes specialized reports, logs and reports as required.30.Conducts studies to accumulate information on current services, equipment capacities, current traffic data and estimated acquisition and installation costs.31.Responds to ASR’s and is responsible for coordinating and/or performing Engineering, Installation and Provisioning of the basic equipment to fulfill an ASR.32.Assists field technicians in resolving customer and network installations and maintenance problems.33.Reads and understands manufacturers’ schematics and documentation, industry standards and group documents, such as, but not limited to, Telcordia, NCTA, IETF, NECA and ITU.34.Understands the available services and limitations of Satellite Communications Networks and Systems.35.Follows company procedures for company buildings and grounds.36.General housekeeping duties of company vehicles, taking the trash out, pick up the mail and freight, and removing snow in the winter time, etc.Knowledge, Abilities, & Skills for Success1.Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.2.Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.3.Ability to respond to common inquires or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies or members of the business community.4.Ability to effectively present information to your supervisor.5.Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers up to five places and use such numbers to calculate footage, amounts and basic formulas.6.Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.7.Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.QualificationsHS Diploma or GED & 12 mos. experience required. Preference for previous switching and key systems exp.Working ConditionsWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions. Occasionally, the employee must work in severe weather conditions such as cold, hot, wet or windy conditions. The work can be above ground level or below ground level and may be performed in winter or summer. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; and risk of electrical shock. Although the job is generally performed outdoors, indoor work may be required, occasionally in cramped quarters.
