Crewmembers will work with the crew lead to collect field data for a research study investigating the effects of forest management on forest production and wildlife habitat. Study sites are located across southeast Alaska on the Tongass National Forest. Measurements will encompass site conditions, overstory tree characteristics, and understory vascular plant cover. Crewmembers must be prepared for physically demanding work in a remote setting with cool wet weather. Field sites require off-trail travel in steep terrain, dense vegetation, and slash. All crewmembers will ensure the quality, eciency, and safety of the work done by the team with logistical oversight provided. Crews will be housed at US Forest Service bunkhouses and may need to camp at some work sites. Crewmembers can stay at FS bunkhouses on their days off. This position will include 90% field and 10% oce work.
Compensation amounts:
$1,500 – one time RT travel allowance
$280 – weekly living allowance
$300 – one time gear allowance (reimbursement)
AmeriCorps eligible ($1,638.89 education award)

Conditions of Employment:
Beginning on 1/18/22, all new SCA volunteer program participants are required to be fully vaccinated. Full vaccination is defined as having received a booster shot six months after the Pfizer and Moderna primary series and two months after the Johnson & Johnson primary series.
Location Description
The research sites are scattered across southeast Alaska. Some can be reached by road, others require travel by foot, boat, ATV, or oat plane. Camping on site may be required for up to 8 days at a time.
Training Provided
Interns will receive training in wilderness first aid, CPR, aircraft and boat safety, ATV use, shoreline survival, defensive driving, bear behavior, pepper spray use, and radio use. Additional training is provided on the use of field research equipment.
Educational/Recreational Opportunities
Interns will be able to interact with scientists and professionals at the Juneau Forestry Sciences Lab. Outdoor recreational opportunities are abundant and include hiking, camping, fishing, biking, kayaking/canoeing, wildlife viewing

In Juneau, we have several apartment-style bunkhouse accommodations. Each apartment has two shared bedrooms with two beds each, two bathrooms, kitchen, and living room. The apartments are fairly new and fully furnished, including towels, bedding and cookware. The bunkhouse is adjacent to a paved bike trail and the city bus route. Bicycles are available for use. All utilities, including cable TV, are provided and there is a laundry room on site. The Hollis bunkhouse is fully furnished, including towels, bedding, and cookware) and has six bedrooms with two beds each, a large communal living and dining area, two communal bathrooms, a double kitchen, pantry, laundry, and gear room. Bicycles are available for use. All utilities are provided. There is no TV available, but a DSL internet connection with WiFi is available.
