Position Description

The University Library at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the new position of Online Learning Librarian. Under the direction of the Head of Research Support Services, the Online Learning Librarian will lead the University Librarys efforts to develop inclusive and accessible online instructional content targeting the learning needs of undergraduate students. The Online Learning Librarian will support the university and librarys strategic priorities related to student success, equity, diversity, and inclusion. This position has the option to be an on-campus, hybrid, or full-time remote-work position (with occasional required travel to Santa Cruz).

The University Library seeks a creative individual with a teaching and learning mindset to (1) lead the library in holistically refreshing and reimagining the librarys asynchronous pedagogical support of the UCSC Writing Program and other high-impact undergraduate courses and programs and (2) spearhead wider library efforts to develop engaging, reusable, course-neutral instructional content about information literacy, library research skills, and other topics in support of lower-division learners.

The vision for the work of this position will be shaped by the campus needs as identified by the incumbent through their research and direct engagement with students, faculty, and campus stakeholders. The Online Learning Librarian will develop a framework for the creation, assessment, and sustainability of the librarys online instructional content. The University Library looks to this position to identify new opportunities and pathways for supporting teaching and learning. The Online Learning Librarian will have space to experiment, learn, and iterate as they develop inclusive approaches to instructional design for information literacy and library research skills that center student needs and student voices.

As a member of the librarys Research Support Services Department, the incumbent will contribute to departmental services and projects and collaborate closely with the Undergraduate Engagement Librarian, the User Experience Librarian, and the librarians who support disciplinary teaching and learning (i.e., upper division and graduate level). The Online Learning Librarian will be expected to participate on relevant library project teams, UC system-wide committees, and professional organizations.

To be eligible for consideration, applicants must meet the qualifications outlined in the Basic Qualifications section below. In addition, applicants with any combination of the following qualifications or experience are encouraged to apply.
Experience teaching, supervising, and/or working with undergraduates.
Experience developing asynchronous lessons and learning objects (e.g., tutorials, videos, assignments, etc.)
Knowledge of online instructional/learning design principles and assessment methods.
Knowledge of the ways that minoritized groups have been marginalized in higher education and strategies for creating inclusive and antiracist learning objects and environments.
Knowledge of information literacy principles and applications of the Framework for Information Literacy in Higher Education.
Knowledge of the current information landscape and how it impacts information-seeking and information literacy (e.g., discovery systems, algorithmic bias, open science).
Experience with current and emerging educational technologies including course management systems, video creation, and web design.
Experience conducting user research to better understand and identify user needs.

We are most interested in finding the best candidate for the job and recognize that the successful candidate may be one who comes from a less traditional background. We encourage you to apply, even if you don’t meet all of the qualifications/experiences listed above.
