The panel process and optics (PPO) team crafts and develops groundbreaking display technologies to support Apple’s phenomenal product line. This includes total optimization & integration of display material, optics, and process to deliver outstanding optical, mechanical, and reliability performances. As part of Apple design and development team you will be working with some of the smartest and most hardworking people in the field, and will be chipping in to exciting new products that will touch lives of millions and enrich your career with invaluable experience. We are looking for a dedicated and motivated R&D leader with a proven track record of materials innovation and solid understanding of polymer chemistry and physics. The individual should have experience leading a group of scientists, engineers, and technicians developing new chemistries and formulations. A successful candidate will not only provide technical mentorship to the team, but also help set direction, motivate and lead the team to develop new materials that meet Apple’s performance requirements for our next generation products.
Key Qualifications
Ph.D in chemistry, polymer science, materials science or related field
5+ years of proven experience in the development of complex materials systems
Experience in fundamental failure analysis methodology to derive a root cause of failure
Experience and knowledge in product development and ultimate translation to manufacturing
Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Competence and experience in supervising multiple projects/teams and set priorities to meet deadlines
Solid teamwork and leadership skills
Description
– Lead all aspects of projects from conceptualization to execution to production, including initial technology scouting, proof of concept, engineering, scale-up, and regulatory considerations – Assess product challenges and provide mentorship to help define development roadmap for the project team – Lead the design and development of novel photopolymer-based materials systems at both lab and pilot scale. This includes identifying and sourcing raw materials with desired functions, formulation optimization, and process optimization – Drive the definition and validation of Critical-to-Quality (CTQ) metrics and quantitative analytical methods to ensure all aspects of the product are managed and controlled – Lead efforts in failure analysis of both materials and component level issues and develop/validate effective solutions
Education & Experience
Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, Material Science & Engineering, or a closely-related field

R&D Materials Manager starts at a minimum annual salary of $142,100. The actual pay may be higher depending on your skills, qualifications, and experience. Additionally, this role might be eligible for discretionary bonuses or commission payments as well as relocation.
