$2,978.01* per month (10-month) – $3,423.00 per month (12-month)

Some vacant positions may be temporary. Temporary positions may be extended year to year, dependent upon funding and departmental needs. Making yourself available for temporary positions increases your employment possibilities and may lead to permanent opportunities. A person hired for a temporary position may also become a temporary employee upon satisfactory completion of the initial probation period of at least six months. Once a temporary employee, you would be eligible to apply for promotion and transfer opportunities to permanent as well as other temporary positions. You may also enjoy other rights and benefits as afforded to an employee in a permanent position, with the exception of return rights and placement rights associated with a reduction-in-force.

Job Summary:

Assists in the implementation of School Safety and Security Programs by performing a variety of duties, at the school-level, involving the protection of students, staff, patrons and property of the Department of Education; supervises school security attendants; fosters positive school-community relations; and performs related duties as assigned.

Applicants must meet all the requirements for the position they are seeking as of the date of the application, unless otherwise specified. Unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience may not be gained concurrently.

Note: Calculation of experience is based on full-time, 40-hour workweeks. Part-time experience is pro-rated. Example: Twelve months of experience at 20 hours/week is equivalent to six months of experience, not one year. Also, hours worked in excess of 40 hours/week will not be credited. Example: Twelve months of experience at 60 hours/week is equivalent to one year of experience, not one and a half years.

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements:

Registration Requirement:

Applicants must be registered as a Guard with the State of Hawaii Board of Private Detectives and Guards, in accordance with Act 208, Session Laws of Hawaii 2010.

Education Requirement:

Graduation from high school or equivalent.

Specialized Experience Requirement:

Two (2) years of progressively responsible work experience in the enforcement of security laws, rules and regulations pertaining to the protection of personnel and property.

Supervisory Experience:

Experience in directing or supervising personnel in security duties. This experience must have included responsibility for scheduling and assigning the work of subordinates; instructing employees in the proper method of performing the work; and keeping records of work activity.

Applicants must have demonstrated evidence of supervisory aptitude. Supervisory aptitude is the demonstration of aptitude or potential for the performance of supervisory duties through successful completion of regular or special assignments which involve some supervisory responsibilities or aspects; by detail to supervisory positions; by completion of training courses in supervision accompanied by application of supervisory skills in assignments; or by favorable appraisals of a supervisor indicating the possession of supervisory potential.

Substitutions Allowed:

Successful completion of a security training course (e.g., reserve police, military police, police academy or equivalent) may be substituted for one year of Specialized Experience.

Successful completion of a two-year or four-year program in police science from an accredited college or university may be substituted for one year of the Specialized Experience.
