Job Description : Vice President of Information Systems
Position Summary
The Vice President of Information Systems is responsible for establishing the strategic vision for information technology across the health systems as well as the optimization of the organization’s Epic electronic health record (EHR) system. This role provides operational oversight for the Information Systems, Health Information, and Communications departments and ensures that each department is operating in support of the organization’s mission. Collaborates with peers in senior leadership to select and optimize technology that ensures the organization is at the forefront of information technology while enhancing patient care and business operations. This position reports directly to the President & CEO.
Responsibilities
People Planning/Development
The VP of Information Systems creates a road map for the team that provides direction and alignment of priorities with the strategic objectives of the department and organization, including growth, training, and process improvement. Delegates responsibilities, establishes clear lines of responsibility and accountability. Elevates team members’ thinking and understanding of the field by infusing best practice knowledge into the work. Leads the selection, development, mentoring and coaching of direct and indirect reports.
Department Leadership
The VP of Information Systems proposes, researches, and manages the development, implementation and assessment of long- and short-term technology goals and objectives. Plans and develops policies to support strategies set by management, makes purchases, and drafts budgets for these changes. Drives execution of the assigned projects and project components. Acts as a champion for positive organizational culture and quality of work life.
System Design and Strategy
Directs the strategic planning, implementation and optimization of the organization’s Epic EHR in support of patient safety organization wide. Leads the development, design and implementation of systems and technology that meet workforce and patient care needs, are cost effective and consistent with best practice. Responsible for technology initiatives for the 227-bed community hospital, a multi-specialty physician practice with 150+ employed providers, and 2,200 employees. Ensures development and maintenance of policies and practices in support of processes. Consults with staff and managers and provides guidance. Provides oversight for relevant vendor relationships, RFPs and vendor selections.
Essential Skills & Experience
Extensive experience with budgeting, planning, and implementation of large-scale multi-year projects along with building high performance teams to support these initiatives.
Demonstrated ability to effectively lead complex IT projects achieving results on-time and under budget.
Proven ability to lead complex organizations with multiple stakeholders.
A passion for assessing emerging technologies and staying abreast of industry trends.
5+ years of progressive IT leadership in a healthcare setting required.
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Health Information Systems, or related field required.
Requirement to obtain Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Health Information Systems, or other healthcare related field within five years of hire.
Requirement to obtain CHIME Certified Healthcare Chief Information Officer (CHCIO) credential within five years of hire.
