Job Description : Assistant/Associate Director of College Counseling(“Assistant” or “Associate” title dependent on experience)REPORTS TO: Director of College CounselingCLASSIFICATION: ExemptThe Assistant/Associate Director of College Counseling focuses on delivering quality, individualized college counseling while helping students develop the college counseling office’s four values:Choices: “I can make a plan that serves my best interest by identifying research questions that connect to personal objectives, by using quality sources, and by paying attention to how biases might influence my decision making.”Self-Awareness: “I can use honest and sustained self-assessment to identify personal needs while coping with uncertainty and maintaining emotional balance.”Autonomy: “I can make incrementally more significant independent decisions while managing a complex process.”Self-Worth: “I can see that no one outcome or type of outcome will define future success, satisfaction, or happiness.”Primary responsibilities include:Counseling ServicesCounseling approximately one-third of each graduating class—approximately 35-40 students and their parents—through the college search and application process with enthusiasm, compassion, and candor while helping students build their college list with an eye towards fit.Conducting individual, family, small group, and class-wide meetings.Leading college seminar for fall seniors and contributing toward the course curriculum.Authoring thoughtful, detailed, and supportive letters of recommendation for all counselees, following a format set by the Director of College Counseling.Coordinating and facilitating a variety of informational programs for students and parents.Collaborating with other staff, faculty, and administrators—especially the Academic Dean, Dean of Equity & Inclusion, Advisors, Director of Learning Services, Athletic Director, Class Deans, and Dean of Students—to support students.Maintaining and cultivating relationships with college admission officers, which includes hosting them during their visits to campus.Staying informed on developments and trends in the college admission field.Serving on school committees as needed, e.g., admission committee, Curriculum Advancement Committee, and Diversity Council.Being an advisor for a group of students meeting weekly and the applicable support those students might require.Demonstrating enthusiasm for attending school events and being involved in the general life of the school.Public RelationsRepresents Marin Academy at regional and national meetings of college admission professionals.Coordinates the visitations of college-admission officers to campus, ensuring that each leaves with an appreciation for our school.Works closely with the Communications office to execute College Counseling Office’s visual presence and quarterly newsletter.Attending professional conferences to represent MA and to develop professionally.Visiting college campuses individually, on college-sponsored trips, and, possibly, as a chaperone on spring break college tours.Ensuring the college counseling information on the MA website and our different databases are up to date.Administrative DutiesMay include overseeing the proctoring of practice tests (SAT and ACT) each fall and spring including communication to families, working with an outside agency (Compass), collaborating with Learning Services, and ensuring spaces and proctoring are set.May include managing the proctoring of AP tests each spring (for students who elect to pursue them), including communication to families, ordering tests, collaborating with Learning Services and the Technology Office, and ensuring compliance with College Board procedures for the day of the tests. Collecting the results from these tests and disseminating to the appropriate community members including families, faculty, and specific administrators.Other duties as assigned.Marin Academy is situated on a 10-acre campus at the base of the hills of San Rafael, CA in the San Francisco Bay Area. As a 9–12 grade independent, college preparatory high school, we have an enrollment of 440 students with academic talent, interest in the arts and athletics, and a passion for a multitude of issues. Our students come from San Francisco, the East Bay, and Sonoma in addition toMarin County. Marin Academy has a block schedule in which classes meet every other day for 75-minute periods.MA is in the early years of an ambitious strategic plan which emphasizes interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary teaching and learning, competency-based assessment, and equity and inclusion.
