Job Duties
Ohio Department of Public Safety – Ohio State Highway Patrol/Ohio Investigative Unit
Positions will be filled at multiple locations including: Athens, Cincinnati, Columbus, and Toledo.
Work Hours: 8 – 10 hour shifts. Hours subject to the needs of the organization. Working days and hours may vary and may be required to travel overnight. Subject to call back.
Individuals selected for hire and not OPOTC certified will be required to attend a 26 week basic peace officer training course.
Independently or under general supervision, plans & conducts covert & overt criminal &/or administrative investigations (i.e., persons, residences, clubs, associations, bars, stores & illegal businesses, as well as areas around them) for violations pertaining to Ohio Revised Code, Ohio Administrative Code, & federal regulations regarding liquor control, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) & tobacco; Utilizes under cover identity &/or state enforcement vehicle & a variety of electronic devices (i.e. audio, visual, photographic, etc.) to conduct operations & covert surveillance; Interviews witnesses, victims &/or suspects in custodial & non-custodial situations; Plans, prepares, obtains, & executes search warrants at businesses, residences, vehicles, &/or digital devices; Makes arrests &/or prepares & issues administrative violation notices; Transports arrested suspects to custodial facilities (i.e., county & city jails); Collects, records, & safeguards evidence which can include counting & making inventory of large sums of cash, debit/benefit cards, guns, &/or drugs; Researches criminal & civil records online or in person; Requests &/or serves grand jury subpoenas for records & reviews records to determines evidentiary value; Prepares & submits evidence for forensic examination; Drafts & submits reports of investigations to supervisors for eventual submission to various prosecutors or the Ohio Attorney General’s Office; Utilizes case management system to document activities, statements, intelligence, property, evidence & reports; Receives & serves Orders of the Liquor Control Commission regarding Ohio licensed establishments; Testifies in municipal, state &/or federal courts of law & before various commissions & state agencies (i.e., Ohio Liquor Control, Casino Control, & Ohio Lottery Commission; Ohio Department of Job & Family Services, & Ohio Department of Health) administrative hearings.
Establishes & maintains positive working relationships with other law enforcement agencies & works cooperatively on joint investigations &/or multi-jurisdictional task forces; Responds to calls for service from the general public &/or local, state, & federal law enforcement agencies (e.g., assist agencies with complex covert & overt investigations & operations; collects & analyzes computer generated data as it relates to ongoing investigations or to detect potential violations within their scope of authority; provides guidance to Ohio law enforcement agencies regarding licensed & unlicensed establishments &/or other subjects in violation of Ohio liquor, gambling, SNAP & tobacco laws; prepares & issues administrative citations on behalf of Ohio law enforcement agencies when a violation has been reported); Coordinates operations with outside law enforcement personnel, victim advocate groups & local court systems.
Provides field training & guidance to probationary enforcement agents; Conducts trainings &/or delivers speeches or presentations on various related topics (i.e., Ohio Liquor Control Act, SNAP fraud, Alcohol Server Knowledge, Sober Truth, etc.) to educate the public, businesses, law enforcement, & governmental personnel; Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED; valid driver’s license; successful completion of department required physical agility standards including vision & hearing testing & background check.
The final applicant accepted for this position will be required to submit to urinalysis to test for illegal drug use. An applicant with a positive test result will not be offered employment, per Section 3719.01 & 3719.41 of Ohio Revised Code. Must be 21 years of age, Ohio resident & United States citizen at time of appointment. Probationary period is one year.

Pursuant to ORC 5502.14, the Department of Public Safety shall not employ or designate a person as an enforcement agent if the person previously has been convicted of or has plead guilty to a felony.
TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT REQUIRED TO REMAIN IN THE CLASSIFICATION AFTER EMPLOYMENT: Must successfully complete basic peace officer training during probationary period. Enforcement Agents must successfully complete basic peace officer training before carrying firearms & making arrests. Must qualify semi-annually in use of firearm; annually in use of shotgun, defensive driving & unarmed self-defense. Must re-certify in CPR annually & every 3 yrs. in multi-media first aid training.
UNUSUAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Requires overnight travel. Exposed to physical harm. Search warrants conducted on hazardous premises such as homes, bars & trash dumpsters. Investigations occur in high crime areas. May work a non-standard schedule consisting of late night, early morning, weekends, and holidays. Conditions may warrant working longer than regular scheduled hours. May be exposed to; violent individuals who are armed (guns, knives, etc.), may evade or resist arrest, attempt to cause injury or death to another, and/or be under the influence of alcohol/drugs; work in hazardous environments and situations, may be exposed to communicable diseases. Subject to automatic relocation.

Individuals selected for hire and not OPOTA certified will be required to attend a 26 week training class located at the Ohio State Highway Patrol Academy in Columbus.
This position is essential, meaning the duties this job performs are critical to the continued operations of the Ohio Department of Public Safety during a public safety emergency (OAC 123: 1-46-01 & DAS Directive HR-D-11). This position will be required to report for duty during any public safety emergency.
This position will be filled in accordance with the bargaining unit agreement if applicable.
