We have partnered with a State Agency to recruit for Hearings Officers to provide remote assistance throughout the State of Texas.Appeal Tribunal Hearings Officers (licensure not required):Put your law degree to work as an administrative decision-maker, conducting unemployment insurance hearings for the Appeal Tribunal (AT). Hearings Officers in the AT are effectively administrative law judges, but with less procedural and evidentiary formality to enforce. The job involves performing entry-level legal work conducting fact-finding hearings to resolve disputes, primarily in unemployment insurance cases, and rendering timely decisions. Occasionally, hearings involve other programs administered by the Agency. The AT’s resolution of administrative disputes is a fundamental part of the agency’s overall mission to support the workforce of Texas.Our hearings are not subject to the formal rules of evidence or procedure, so no previous experience is required. We provide training in hearing skills before any hearings are conducted. The training includes information and resources needed to facilitate the hearing and in drafting decisions that conform to existing Law, the Texas Unemployment Compensation Act, Commission rules and Commission precedent. After training, guidance is available from experienced supervising attorneys and peers.Within the confines of due process and Commission policy, Hearings Officers are expected to employ initiative and independent judgment. Successful Hearings Officers are self-motivated, set high standards for themselves, enjoy interacting with many kinds of people, and maintain a calm demeanor under occasional stress.Required Qualifications:Graduation from an accredited law school approved by the American Bar AssociationMust have a secure internet connection and ability to work remotelyMust be very comfortable with using a computer and navigating between different programs, would describe oneself as tech-savvyPreferred Qualifications:Experience and/or knowledge of Texas Payday LawExperience and/or knowledge of the Texas Unemployment Compensation ActExperience conducting informal, administrative hearingsExperience and/or knowledge of legal principles and proceedings relatedDemonstrated ability to efficiently identify and summarize relevant facts, apply logical analysis, and draft legal documents in a timely fashionAbility to interpret and apply laws and use legal reference materialsAbility to work in a team environment, multi-task, work well under pressure while meeting deadlinesEffective communication skillsExcellent typing skills of 50 words per minuteMeticulous eye for detailExperience using Microsoft WordAbility to adapt and willingness to learnExpectations:Employee must be able to commit to full time work during this assignment, and be available M-F, 8-5, 40 hours/weekAgency will provide computer; employee will provide secure internet connection (ethernet cable or Wi-Fi adapter) and use the agency’s VPNProjected Term: long term contract with start date of April 25thCompensation: $28/hour (W2)Work Location: Work will be done remotely from any location in Texas; arrangements must be made through the agency in Austin, TXWork Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8-5 (40 hours/week)What’s it like to work for Peak Performers?Qualified applicants with chronic medical conditions and/or disabilities receive job preference.Our clients can hire you at any time – with no fee!
