Employment Opportunities in Temporary Positions

Some vacant positions may be temporary. Temporary positions may be extended year to year, dependent upon funding and departmental needs. Making yourself available for temporary positions increases your employment possibilities and may lead to permanent opportunities. A person hired for a temporary position may also become a temporary employee upon satisfactory completion of the initial probation period of at least six months. Once a temporary employee, you would be eligible to apply for promotion and transfer opportunities to permanent as well as other temporary positions. You may also enjoy other rights and benefits as afforded to an employee in a permanent position, with the exception of return rights and placement rights associated with a reduction-in-force.

Job Summary

Level III

Performs detailed routines of limited complexity pertinent to processing of personnel actions which are typically: (a) assigned on a continuing basis; and (b) are covered by well established guidelines, procedures and/or instructions which provide a fairly specific basis for taking action; and performs other related duties as assigned.

Level IV

Performs substantive personnel clerical work which requires an examination of the contents of documents and the exercise of judgment to determine the proper course of action; and performs other related duties as assigned.

Level V

Independently performs substantive personnel clerical work that includes a significant proportion of those of a novel and/or unusually complicated nature which presents many possible alternative courses of action and requires use of considerable judgment; and/or performs limited technical assistance work; and performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualification Requirements:

Applicants must meet all the requirements for the position they are seeking as of the date of the application, unless otherwise specified. Unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience may not be gained concurrently.

Note: Calculation of experience is based on full-time, 40-hour workweeks. Part-time experience is pro-rated. Example: Twelve months of experience at 20 hours/week is equivalent to six months of experience, not one year. Also, hours worked in excess of 40 hours/week will not be credited. Example: Twelve months of experience at 60 hours/week is equivalent to one year of experience, not one and a half years.

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements:

General Experience:

One (1) year of progressively responsible general office clerical experience.

Specialized Experience:

One (1) year for level III; two (2) years for level IV; and for level V, three (3) years of work experience in an office where the work required the knowledge and application of pertinent personnel rules, regulations, procedures and program requirements.

Substitutions Allowed:

1. Successful completion of a clerical curriculum at an accredited business or technical school may be substituted for the General Experience on a month-to-month basis up to a maximum of one year.

2. Successful completion of an academic year in an accredited college or university above the high school level may be substituted for one year of the General Experience.

3. Graduation from an accredited 4-year college or university may be substituted for one year of General Experience and two years of Specialized Experience. Applicants possessing this educational qualification are deemed to have met all of the requirements for the Personnel Clerk IV level.
