At Hilo Medical Center, a nationally-recognized “Top Performing” hospital, the Recreational Aide is a valuable member of our team. We are currently seeking a Recreational Aide-Entry Level, Full Performance for our busy Psychiatric Acute-Adult department. This position is primarily responsible to provide supportive, therapeutic, and recreational activities to patients/residents. The position may be required to work on shifts, including evenings, and weekends and holidays.
Hilo is located on the east side of the island of Hawaii, and has a quaint old-Hawaii, small town atmosphere. The hospital staff is community-oriented. It is home to the Hawaii Community College, University of Hawaii, several excellent schools and convenient shopping.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
PREREQUISITE QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED FOR ENTRY LEVEL:
Experience and Essential Knowledge and Abilities: One (1) year of work experience in a hospital or other medically oriented institution or program where the primary or basic objective was to observe and report on a variety of physical and/or mental symptoms and conditions and implement care and/or treatment procedures for a caseload of patients/residents. Such experience must have demonstrated knowledge of basic spoken and written English; personal hygiene; bodily care and body mechanics; and housekeeping; the ability to read, write, speak, understand and communicate effectively with others in English; perform tasks involving heavy physical effort (e.g., lift, position, push, pull, and carry 50 lbs. or more; and walk/stand for extended periods of time); demonstrate poise and tact in dealing with a wide range of patients/residents with different illnesses and injuries; interact patiently and respectfully with staff, patients/residents and visitors.
CERTIFICATION: Basic Life Support (BLS) in Health Care Provider (adult, child and infant) must be obtained within six (6) months of employment. Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) in Health Care Provider (adult, child and infant) is preferred. Please submit copy of certification with the application.
PREREQUISITE QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED FOR FULL PERFORMANCE
Experience and Essential Knowledge and Abilities: In addition to the entry level qualifications, one (1) year of progressively responsible work experience in a recreational care program/setting which involved receiving on-the-job training in performing a variety of basic recreational therapy practices and techniques. Such experience must have demonstrated basic knowledge of recreational treatment plans and leisure-time activities; normal human growth and development; and the ability to adhere to orders and independently carry out simple recreational activities and therapeutic treatment plans; communicate and deal effectively with patients/residents and their families; and work effectively with others.
SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED:
Successful completion of an occupational therapy assistant education program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) which leads to an associate degree may be substituted for one (1) year of the work experience required.
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in recreation, physical education, special education, psychology or sociology which included a minimum of 12 semester credit hours or 18 quarter hours in recreation or therapy oriented area of study such as community recreation, physical fitness, gross motor skills, human growth and development, human personality and behavior, and/or abnormal psychology may be substituted for all of the work experience required.

SELECTIVE CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENT: Possession of a valid State of Hawaii Type 3 Driver’s License. Submit copy of driver’s license.
MUST BE AVAILABLE TO WORK SHIFTS, WEEKENDS AND HOLIDAYS, BASED ON HOSPITAL OPERATIONS (SERVICES ARE PROVIDED 24/7).
MEDICAL/PHYSICAL EXAMINATION REQUIREMENT: Offers of employment will be contingent on successfully passing a pre-employment examination, which includes drug screen and other regulatory medical requirements such as, but not limited to, two-step tuberculosis (TB) screen. The cost for physical examinations, except the cost for drug screening and blood draw for QuantiFERON and Titers, shall be borne by the applicant and not the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation.
COVID-19 VACCINATION REQUIREMENT: COVID-19 vaccination is a condition of employment for Hawaii Health Systems Corporation. After receiving a conditional offer of employment, all prospective new HHSC employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. New employees are required to provide confirmation of their full vaccination status by presenting their CDC vaccination card or VAMS Certificate prior to their start date.
