ODNR owns and manages state parks, state forests, state nature preserves and wildlife areas. We license all hunting, fishing and watercraft; oversee and permit all mineral extraction, monitor dam safety, manage water resources and serve as the second largest Law Enforcement presence in the State of Ohio.
We are accepting applications for a Wildlife Communications Specialist within the Division of Wildlife, headquartered at the District 5 Shooting Range, assigned to Greene county. What you will do…
Conducts wildlife education and information programs (e.g., shooting sports, fisheries management, hunting, fishing, trapping, wildlife identification and wildlife diversity and wildlife conservation topics);
Assists in development and implementation of wildlife program/education curriculums for use by educators and conducts clinics (e.g., archery, rifle, pistol, shotgun operation, firearm cleaning and maintenance, hunter, trapping, fishing, firearm safety and species specific education);
Conducts hunter education, trapper education, national archery in schools, and passport to fishing instructor courses and workshops; oversee volunteers (e.g. communicates with and coordinates, advises); presents interpretive programs and conducts interpretive workshops for educators;
Develops and presents educational displays; communicates with internal and external organizations (e.g., conservation clubs, firearms/archery instructors) to conduct shooting sports programing at range education centers and district wide;
Provides preliminary contact with public in person and through educational organizations to promote, educate and inform regarding conservation programs (e.g., writes news releases; appears on radio and television shows; provides programs, speakers and materials to schools, libraries, news media, organizations and volunteers).
Assists other public agencies in wildlife-oriented education programs (e.g., soil and water conservation districts, park districts); assists in the development of educational videos, pamphlets and programs for state-wide use; assists administrator (e.g. shooting range, training, and educational) in the planning and implementation of in-service training programs for district personnel;
Maintains, prepares, inventories and tracks check in and check out of outdoor skills equipment, firearms, bows, trailers, audiovisual equipment, and displays assigned to section for district wide use; cleans and maintains firearms and other assigned equipment as needed;
Assists shooting range, training, and education administrator with administrative tasks (e.g., purchasing (e.g., educational materials/supplies, project writing for information and education projects and evaluating the effectiveness of agency program participation).

Qualifications
Completion of undergraduate core program in wildlife education or fish and/or wildlife management; 6 months training or 6 months experience in wildlife education or fish and/or wildlife management; 1 course or 3 moths experience in public relations.
Or 24 months training or 24 months experience in wildlife education or fish and/or wildlife management; 1 course or 3 months experience in public relations.
Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above.
Knowledge of: inventory control; employee training and development; safety practices (firearms safety, hunter education); public relations; agency policies and procedures (ODNR, Division of Wildlife)*; government structure and process (state and federal wildlife rules and regulations)*; natural sciences (fish and wildlife management, wildlife education, outdoor skills).
Skilled in: word processing (MS Office Suite, photographic editing software); equipment operation (computer, audiovisual, hunting and fishing equipment, vehicle, trailer).
Ability to: deal with problems involving several variables in familiar context; prepare and deliver speeches before specialized audiences and general public (lecture on wildlife education); gather, collate and classify information about data, people or things; handle sensitive inquiries from and contacts with officials and general public; recognize unusual or threatening conditions and take appropriate action.
