About the position
Wirecutter is seeking an associate copy editor to read and edit content—including reviews, blog posts, fast updates, newsletters, trends articles, and Wirecutter Deals posts—as well as to help the CE team support the entire editorial effort on a daily basis. This role has the potential to be remote.
As the associate copy editor, you’ll find your work to be filled with variety. One day, you might read over quick updates to live articles about cat litter boxes and electric scooters, participate in getting a newsy rush post about the latest iPhones up on the site in the best condition possible, review the infographic text for an upcoming guide to mesh networks, and finish up your second read of a 2,000-word gift guide. The next day, you might edit blurbs for Instagram graphics and then settle in for your initial read of 6,000 words about smart light bulbs.
At Wirecutter, the CE team’s work goes beyond basic proofreading and editing for grammar and punctuation. Reporting to the copy chief, you’ll have a direct role in maintaining the high quality of our reader-service journalism and the consistency of our uniquely approachable yet authoritative voice. And you’ll contribute to making our content readable, respectful, and clear.
Responsibilities
Edit and proofread articles, under the copy chief’s supervision, for grammar, style, consistency, clarity, logic, and readability
Specialize in editing updates, fast-turnaround posts, deals content, infographics text, and some social media content, developing strong collaborative relationships with those respective teams
Engage with CE team members to learn about and discuss matters of grammar and style
Query and coordinate with editors and writers to resolve issues
Collaborate with the production team to meet or beat deadlines
Perform related work as assigned
Qualifications
1+ years of editing or writing experience in a professional or academic setting; a basic copy editing test will be administered
Flexibility to adapt to a comprehensive house style; familiarity with AP style is a plus
Familiarity with WordPress or other CMS platforms; comfort around HTML is a plus
Time-management and prioritization skills
Comfort working with remote and office-based colleagues across time zones; familiarity with remote-collaboration tools is a plus
Please include your résumé/CV and a cover letter with your application. You can upload only one item in the “Résumé/CV” box, so please combine your résumé and cover letter and upload them as one file.
This is a union position as classified by the News Guild of New York.
