Job Description : Position InformationPresent Position Number01068WRole Code TitleLibrary Specialist IIPosition TitleDigitization SpecialistUnit Mission StatementW&M Libraries support and enhance teaching and research, and foster intellectual curiosity, creativity, and lifelong learning.Position SummaryWilliam & Mary Libraries seeks a Digitization Specialist to support the Libraries’ expanding digitization program. The Digitization Specialist works on large- and small-scale digitization projects dealing with a range of the Libraries’ manuscripts, photographs, books, and other materials. They are responsible for day-to-day digitization operations and for ensuring work is produced to established standards. The Digitization Specialist develops and maintains knowledge of various imaging equipment and workflows to create digital surrogates. They hire, train, and supervise a team of student employees on the proper handling of archival materials, digitization equipment and software; hands-on digitization and post-processing; work-flow processes and quality control on production work, and ensure project timelines are met.The Digitization Specialist will assist the Head of Digital Services with project planning, schedules, and digitization statistics and coordinates digitization projects with staff from across W&M. The position is a part of the Digital Services team within Content Services at William & Mary Libraries.Specific Duties & Responsibilities:Manage and coordinate the day-to-day operations of the digitization lab, consisting of project assignments, tracking, quality assurance, prioritization of on-demand digitization requests and planned projects by maintaining accurate tracking and inventory of queues.Perform digitization production work such as hands-on digitization, post-processing, quality control and digital asset management.Supervise student employees. Recruit, hire, train, and orient student employees. Schedule, assign, and prioritize workloads. Monitor and evaluate performance and provide guidance and feedback to students.Create and maintain training documentation for staff (students, volunteers, and library personnel) on the use of digitization equipment, and processes.Work with the Head of Digital Services and Digital Projects Working Group on planning projects, and initiatives, including keeping the Digital Services team and other stakeholders advised on projects and operational needs or issues.Perform routine maintenance and cleaning on various systems and equipment such as scanners, cameras, and computers to ensure a safe and clean unit.Work with digitization equipment vendors to ensure that hardware and software perform optimally, troubleshoot problems, and conduct software updates.Required QualificationsHigh school diploma or equivalent required.Experience with photography/scanning, digital image processing, digitization projects, or working in a technical production environment.Knowledge of at least one of the following: Adobe Photoshop, Capture One, Epson Scan, digital asset management systems.Working knowledge of digital imaging tools, techniques, and processes.Proficiency with computers, and ability to learn innovative technology.Highly organized with the ability to meet deadlines and manage competing priorities.Experience working in a team-based work environment.Experience hiring, training, supervising, or managing people.Demonstrated ability to learn new image capture and processing applications quickly.Preferred QualificationsExperience teaching technical tasks.Library, archives and/or museum experience.Experience with spreadsheet apps, such as Microsoft Excel, Open Refine, and/or Google SheetsExperience with task management and communication tools, such as Microsoft Teams, Trello, or PlannerAdvertised Pay Range$40,000-$45,000.
