Job Description : Director, Advocacy Communications – Atlanta FocusedMarch 2022Position DescriptionThe Georgia Charter Schools Association (GCSA) supports, fosters, and advocates for the development of high-quality public charter schools and networks that improve opportunities for Georgia students. The Director, Advocacy Communications is a new role at GCSA and will be responsible for developing and overseeing execution of the Association’s advocacy and communications strategies, with a particular focus on Atlanta, all with the goal of strengthening public support for charter schools and the charter movement’s ability to achieve its strategic goals. This is currently a 12-month grant-funded position. The ideal candidate will be familiar with Georgia’s political and education landscape and have a solid track record of campaign experience, issue advocacy or interest group work. The Director, Advocacy Communications will report to Bonnie Holliday, Executive Vice President of Policy and External Relations, GCSA.Responsibilities· Build and execute GCSA’s advocacy and communication advocacy strategy (with measurable goals and benchmarks), with a focus on Atlanta and in collaboration with GCSA’s President and CEO, members of the senior leadership team, and ultimately member schools.· Support GCSA’s Director of Grassroots Advocacy work to set strategy and manage direct lobbying, legislative advocacy, and other government relations.· Support GCSA’s Senor Director of Communications work to set a communications strategy that supports GCSA’s advocacy priorities, as well as all internal and external communications, public relations, and marketing efforts.· Represent GCSA externally among member schools and other key stakeholders to build strong coalitions to move its work forward.· Develop a core group of Atlanta-based member schools to build storytelling capacity, increase positive charter school coverage and mobilize on communications and issues.· Develop communications and advocacy messaging and assets and execute trainings for member schools and key stakeholders.· Keep schools informed (e.g., polling data, most effective messaging, school and state data, etc.) and engaged (e.g., legislative calls to action) in GCSA’s communications and advocacy efforts.· Manage existing, and build new, relationships with Atlanta elected officials, stakeholders, partners and member schools; foster these relationships to stay abreast of new developments, opportunities, and threats that will impact charter public school issues and initiatives.· Identify opportunities to leverage and deploy GCSA staff and local school leaders to engage with elected officials to further GCSA’s advocacy goals.· Ensure strong input, engagement and participation from GCSA’s member schools.· Create, track and report out on goals, outcomes, and performance metrics; provide regular progress updates to the Executive Vice President of Policy and External Relations.· Act as Association spokesperson as needed/appropriate.QualificationsThe most competitive candidates for this position will have many of the following experiences and skills:· Passion for and commitment to helping Georgia’s public charter school sector thrive.· A belief in the power and possibility of charter public schools and the importance of stakeholder engagement and activation in public policy, particularly among historically underrepresented populations.· Successful and progressively responsible campaign experience, or issue advocacy or interest group work. Political fundraising, direct lobbying, and legislative advocacy experiences are all pluses. Familiarity and/or experience with the GA political landscape is a must.· Strong messaging and storytelling skills, with the ability to understand and creatively explain issues and trends affecting public education in Georgia and nationally.· Track record of creating and executing plans and/or campaigns to reach short- and long-term goals.· Demonstrated success in managing cross-team initiatives.· Solid experience and knowledge of building and hosting trainings· Superb relationship building skills with the ability to build consensus, engage a wide range of stakeholders and allies, and navigate complex community and political dynamics.· Able to synthesize and translate complex advocacy language or strategy to gain broad appeal and generate calls to action.· Ability to execute autonomously in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines.· Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, and collaboration skills; high attention to detail.· Ability to hold sensitive information with discretion and confidentiality.· Exceptional time and project management skills; ability to excel in a virtual environment with limited direct supervision.· Bachelor’s degree preferred.· 5+ years of experience in a similar advocacy, communications or campaign role.Location and TimingThis position is available immediately. This position is a hybrid role which will require some in-person work with schools in the Atlanta Public School system, some in-person work with staff at GCSA’s offices at Lenox Center (3355 Lenox Road, Suite 440, Atlanta, GA 30326), and some remote work. Some additional in-state travel may be required.CompensationGCSA offers a competitive compensation package including salary, health, dental, life and disability insurance, retirement contributions, and paid time off.
