Position : Gallery Assistant

Job Description : Gallery Assistants work with the Exhibitions and Special Projects team at Flyspace Productions and are responsible for the installation of work, preparation of exhibition spaces, and monitoring and security of venues and exhibitions. The Art Assistants and are scheduled on an as-needed basis throughout the year and report to the Gallery Manager. This primary role of this position is to support the presentation of art in various forms and to ensure the safety of the work and people enjoying it, and to best meet the vision of the artist.
Primary work duties often include:
Provide on-site monitoring of exhibition space.
Unlocking and securing the exhibition space each day with the assistance of on-site security officers.
Keeping track of attendance in the gallery.
Preparing the exhibition for display upon arrival. This includes turning on lights, starting up electronic work, reseting or adjusting artwork as needed. It also includes clearing any trash or debris, ensuring that walk ways to any exits are clear, and being sure that the space is set as intended prior to the opening of the gallery.
Properly closing and turning off the gallery as needed at the close of each gallery shift.
While the gallery is open to the public, the attendant will act as a greeter and welcome guests to the space, provide any information or answers to questions possible, and provide a friendly and welcoming atmosphere for all guests.
The Gallery Assistant will also provide a level of security for the exhibition and ensure that guests are interacting with the work as intended, that the space is protected, and that the guests are safe and secure inside the venue.
Gallery Assistants often serve as the liaison between the public and the venue, the artist, or the project coordinator and are occasionally asked to relay information or comments.
Occasionally Handling and moving artwork
Troubleshooting in the gallery as needed for issues such as damaged work, medical incidents, etc.
Installation Support:
Work as part of a team to prepare gallery spaces, receive and condition report work, install artwork, and maintain work appropriately
Assist artist, curator, or exhibition manager with support in displaying the work while exhibiting a respect for the work and artistic process
Additional Duties:
Team Support: Working with the entire team to support one another and provide assistance in other departments as needed.
Project Assistance: Assisting with special projects as needed.
Job Qualifications:
Previous experience in an art related field
High School Diploma or GED
Must be over 18 years old
Competencies and Skills Required:
Attention to detail with high regard for the works of art
Prompt attendance and adherence to a schedule
Ability to take direction and understand instruction, and the capacity to ask questions when more clarification or information is necessary
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast paced, and sometimes stressful, rapidly changing environment
Willing to work in a flexible schedule that may include long hours and irregular times, including weekends and holidays
Eagerness to learn and willingness to be trained
Maturity and understanding of an artistic process and the ability to work closely with clients, including artists and designers, in a diplomatic and professional manner
Ability to work alone or in a group in a safe and professional manner with necessary safety equipment.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to sit, to use hands, to talk and hear, and to understand and speak English. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms, climb, hold objects securely, stand, sit, or move freely around the space. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, or the ability to recognize movement. The employee is often occasionally to be able to lift and/or carry or move objects. These physical demands are representative of those that may be expected of employee to successfully perform the essential duties of this position. The work environment for the employee in this position will depend on the location of the installation or exhibit, and may be indoors or outdoors.
Classification:
This is a part time, hourly position with no guaranteed hours on a time-available schedule. Specific hours and job duties will be posted according to available shifts.
Rate:
The hourly rate for this position is $15 per hour. This is a non-exempt, hourly position and is eligible for overtime.
