Job Description : Petersburg Borough has an opening for the position of Journeyman Lineman. This is a regular full-time position, with an hourly rate of $47.31 for PERS Tier 1-3 employees or $45.42 for PERS Tier 4. (IBEW Contract, July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2024). The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.)Strings and repairs high voltage transmission lines and distribution lines, installs insulators and erects poles, installs electrical apparatus such as arresters, transformers, fuses, switch gear devices, and substations.Investigates electrical system malfunctions and utility service problems for corrective action.Repairs electrical equipment malfunctions.Performs and assists in the restoration of service on power polesProvides Line Foreman with suggestions for improving crew productivity.Operates aerial manlift equipment, hydraulic booms and tools, backhoe, dump truck, front end loader, and air compressor as duties require.Reads water and electrical meters as needed.Provides for safety of generation operation by observing meters, gauges and related devices and takes appropriate action.Dispatches loads and corrects power outages when necessary.May serve as Apprentice Lineman working under close supervision of a Journeyman.Performs other duties as assignedDistinguishing CharacteristicsThe work assigned to positions in the Lineman classification is characterized by the element of responsibility for investigating, repairing, and installing electrical transmission and distribution lines and the responsibility to work independently.Operator Premium QualificationsThis position may be upgraded to receive the Operator Premium compensation when the employee demonstrates safe proficiency in: Operating the diesel and hydro generation plants; restoring power to the system after outages; performing shift work as required; and performing operator maintenance duties.Operator DutiesAssumes responsibilities of Power Plant Operator as required.Provides for safety of generation operation by observing meters, gauges and related devices and takes appropriate action.Dispatches loads and corrects power outages when necessary.Monitors Power Plant generators to maintain continual distribution of power (120 volts and 60 HZ).Requires selection of most efficient engine to operate, spot checking for problems, measuring temperatures regularly, and cleaning/oiling when necessary.Notifies mechanic when repairs are required.Once an experienced operator, incumbent may perform training for new operators.Working ConditionsIncumbent performs approximately 50% or more of duties outdoors in a variety of working conditions. Physical effort is required at work locations with possible risk of physical injury while working with high voltages and heavy materials. Lifting normally does not exceed 50 lbs. per item, but can weigh up to 175 lbs. May be required to ride in helicopter or float plane to check dam site. May be required to work underneath helicopter for slinging loads. While working as operator, up to 90% of duties are performed in seated position in noisy environment. Employee may be exposed to physical hazards while working around large diesel engines and electrical generators.
