Position Description
Seattle University has an exciting, dynamic opportunity for a Learning Specialist to join our community.
Under the general direction of the director of Learning Assistance Programs, this position is responsible for the maintenance of supportive academic programs and services for Seattle University students through Student Academic Services. Provides direct service to students; recruits, trains, and supervises student tutors and study group leaders. Collaborates with others on campus to ensure coordination of learning support to students. Reports to the Director of Learning Assistance Programs in the Lemieux Library and McGoldrick Learning Commons. Program Coordination

Plans, implements, evaluates, and revises services as necessary.

Recruits and hires student subject specialists, tutors and/or study group facilitators (maintaining a total of 30 — 65 each quarter).

Trains, supports and supervises these student leaders in their academic mentoring role.

Oversees keeping of program data, including tutor certifications through the national College Reading and Learning Association.

Student Services

Meets individually with students to assess their academic needs and strengths and helps them develop strategies compatible with their strengths and the learning task.

Participates in the quarterly learning strategy workshop series and presents on a variety of topics to support academic success. Campus Liaison for Learning Assistance Programs

Participates in events hosted by the campus community to increase awareness about our services available to particular student groups such as transfer students, non-traditional students and student-athletes.

Represents Learning Assistance Programs on various campus committees.

Participates in weekly individual and team meetings with Learning Assistance Programs staff.

Participates in quarterly department meetings.

Collaborates with faculty, staff and departments across campus to ensure appropriate service delivery to students.

Work week may include evening hours once a week. Occasional weekend hours as needed for tutor training, supervision of study groups, and participation in orientation activities. Participates as an active member of a regional learning assistance professional group that shares expertise and experience related to programs and current issues in college learning assistance.

Attends national/international conferences, engaging with current research on learning assistance and learning commons management; tutoring and study group program development; and other pertinent topics. Serves on committees, particularly those oriented to serving particular student populations more effectively, as requested.

Perform other duties as assigned by the director of Learning Assistance Programs.
Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in education and/or specialty area and two years of higher education experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and databases sufficient to accomplish job requirements.

Effective communication with faculty, staff and students; excellent interpersonal skills; enthusiasm for conferring with colleagues.
Preferred qualifications:
Master’s degree in education or related field preferred.

Evidence of sensitivity to the needs of particular populations at the college level such as first year students (both first time in college and transfer students), non-traditional students, student athletes, and students with learning disabilities or differences.

Knowledge of how to promote skills in reading and study strategies, preferably at the college level.

Demonstrated skill in utilizing new technology applications and creating and maintaining databases.

Knowledge of program development and assessment.
Knowledge of adult learning and developmental stages.
