Position : U.S. Probation Officer
Job Description : Duties
Probation officers conduct investigations and prepare reports for the court with recommendations for sentencing of individuals convicted of federal offenses. The preparation of these reports requires interviewing defendants and their families; summarizing defendants’ prior criminal records and financial status; investigating the offense and contacting law enforcement agencies and attorneys. The purpose of these activities is to gather the information needed to present factual reports to the court. Probation officers often testify in court as to the basis for their factual findings and guideline applications.
Probation officers supervise offenders to maximize adherence to imposed conditions, reduce risks to the community, and to provide correctional treatment. They maintain personal contact with offenders through office and community visits and by telephone. Probation Officers make referrals to appropriate outside agencies such as mental health/drug treatment facilities and employment/training agencies. Probation Officers are required to maintain detailed records of all case activity.
Requirements
Conditions of Employment
BA or BS degree (preferably in Criminology, Criminal Justice or Social Sciences/behavioral disciplines) with 2 years relevant experience or a Master’s Degree. Selected candidates must not have reached their 37th Birthday at the time of appointment (unless they have current or previous federal law enforcement experience) and must satisfactorily complete an OPM investigation, a drug screening test, and be medically cleared.
Qualifications
CL-27 – Applicant must have BA or BS Degree (preferable in Criminology, Criminal Justice, or any of the Social Sciences/Behavioral disciplines) and have 2 years of specialized work experience, post Bachelors.
CL-28 – Applicant must have Master’s Degree.
Specialized experience is defined as progressively responsible experience, gained after completion of a bachelor’s degree, in such fields as probation, pretrial services, parole, corrections, criminal investigations, or work in substance/addiction treatment. Experience as a police, custodial, or security officer, without any criminal investigative experience, is not creditable.
Education
BA or BS (preferably in Criminology, Criminal Justice or any of the Social Sciences Behavioral Disciplines.
Additional information
Per current Eastern District of New York Judiciary Policy, new employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Proof of vaccination will be required prior to entrance on duty.
