To operate a complex and comprehensive computerized reservation system to place reservations, sell and issue passenger tickets, make travel reservations, provide passenger rail and tour information, and coordinate boarding activities. To operate and maintain the inventory of the Gift Shop at the Denali Depot.
Examples of Duties
Provides customer service by greeting customers, answering questions, and assisting with travel plans. Coordinates individual bookings by determining travel dates and destination. Makes travel reservations using a computerized reservation system. Prints and issues tickets and refunds. Prepares conductor’s manifest and notification of seat assignments.
Responsible for the operation of the Gift Shop in the Denali Depot. Duties include opening and closing of the store, setting up and putting away displays as needed; arranging merchandise to promote sales; operating cash register, using computer inventory tracking system, and credit card machine.
Provides service to the public by answering inquiries regarding the Railroad’s passenger, baggage, and related information, i.e. quotes rates regarding passenger fares, baggage allowances and excessive baggage rates, tours, events, activities, and other information of interest.
Compiles daily balanced sales transaction reports and submits them to the Accounting Manager. Responsible for cash advance fund and safeguarding tickets and all monies collected from sale of tickets and merchandise. Collects payment by credit card and maintains confidentiality of credit card information. Operates cash register, computer inventory tracking system, and credit card machine.
Coordinates depot activities to ensure train’s timely departure and follow-up activities in preparation for the next scheduled train.
Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related duties as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED is required. One year of verifiable front-line customer service experience is required. One-year of experience in a fast-paced office environment is preferred. Requires skill and knowledge to operate a computerized reservation system and 10-key machine, fax, copier, and related office equipment. Must have excellent communication (including telephone etiquette) and interpersonal skills. Prior experience in the travel, tourism or hotel industry is strongly preferred. Knowledge of reservation procedures, basic accounting procedures, schedules, passenger and baggage tariffs, and tour packages is helpful. Must be able to handle money and reconcile accounting procedures. Must be people oriented. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Ability to work irregular work schedules, weekends, holidays and overtime is required.

The following briefly describes the main benefits available to regular employees of the Alaska Railroad Corporation. Actual benefits differ by bargaining unit.
Retirement Plans
ARRC Pension Plan – Participation is mandatory. You are automatically enrolled in the Plan when you meet the eligibility requirement of your bargaining unit. Employees contribute 9% of their Earnings on a pre-tax basis. The Railroad is exempt from participation in Social Security; however, Medicare Tax is withheld. Participants vest with 5 years of eligible Vesting Service which entitles one to receive a pension benefit at retirement age.
A new tier of benefits was added for new hires in the ARW and TCU represented unions and for non-represented employees July 1, 2015.
Tier 1 Description
Normal Retirement Age is age 62. The formula for a monthly Normal Retirement Benefit is the sum of:
2% x Final Average Earnings x all Credited Service, PLUS
0.5% x Final Average Earnings x Credited Service earned after 2005 and after completing 10 years of Credited Service.
(Final Average Earnings are computed from the 3 highest consecutive years of Earnings.)
Tier 2 Description
Normal Retirement Age is age 65. The formula for a monthly Normal Retirement Benefits is 2% x Final Average Earnings x all Credited Service.
Early retirement, survivor and disability benefits are available for vested participants, although the benefit levels differ for Tier 1 and Tier 2 participants.
401(k) Tax Deferred Savings Plan – Participation is optional. You may enroll once you meet the eligibility requirement of your bargaining unit. Depending on the bargaining unit, there may be an employer match.
457 Deferred Compensation Plan – Participation is optional for non-represented employees.
Insurance and Flexible Spending Plans
All plans are optional except the RR Dental Plan for bargaining unit employees.
Health Insurance Plan
A comprehensive health insurance plan, self-insured by the ARRC and administered by Premera Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alaska, with medical, prescription drug, dental, vision and hearing components. Coverage is also available for the employee’s spouse and dependent children. ARRC and the participant share the premium cost. Eligibility after 90 days for bargaining unit employees, and date of hire for non-represented employees.
RR National Dental: mandatory dental-only plan for bargaining unit employees (covers dependents also). Employee paid.
Life Insurance: Basic, AD&D, Supplemental and Dependent Life. Employee paid.
Flexible Spending Accounts: health care and dependent care. Employee paid.
Paid Leave & Holidays
Vacation Leave –accrual per bi-weekly pay period:
Represented Employees
0-3 Years of Service = 4 Hours
>3-15 Years of Service = 6 Hours
>15 Years of Service = 8 Hours
Non-Represented Employees
0-3 Years of Service = 6 Hours
>3-15 Years of Service = 8 Hours
>15 Years of Service = 10 Hours
Sick Leave: accrues at 4 hours (Represented) or 2 hours (Non-Represented) per pay period.
