What you will be doing:

The incumbent will be part of a four-person crew that installs, maintains, and operates two fish wheels on the lower Chilkat River. This position identifies, enumerates, tags, and collects biological data of various Pacific salmon species, meticulously organizing and entering all data into the appropriate spreadsheets and databases daily for area managers. This position is responsible for the general operation and upkeep of the fish wheels, outboard jet boats utilized to access the fish wheels, state vehicles, and the Haines ADF&G yard and warehouses. This seasonal position generally works mid-May through mid-October.

Our organization, mission, and culture:

As a member of the Chilkat River fish wheels salmon stock assessment project, this position contributes to the department’s missions and goals by providing critical information to the Area Management Biologist for in-season management of the Lynn Canal (District 15) commercial drift gillnet fisheries. Additionally, this position provides information for estimating annual escapement and harvest of Chilkat River salmon stocks, run reconstructions, and stock status assessment.

Benefits of joining our team:

The working conditions you can expect:

The Chilkat fish wheels are located approximately between miles 7 and 10 along the Haines Highway accessible by state vehicles and a river jet boat. The incumbent will start at the Haines ADF&G office every morning and proceed to the fish wheels to perform two daily wheel checks in the morning and in the afternoon, while performing various tasks and data entry between these checks as deemed appropriate by both the crew lead and direct supervisor.
