Position : Medical Records Technician (Coding)

Job Description : Duties

Utilize outpatient or inpatient coding guidelines to code disease and injury diagnoses, acuity of care, and procedures in a wide range of ambulatory/inpatient/outpatient settings and specialties.
Select the appropriate codes and modifiers from several possible codes and references to determine the one which most accurately describes the proper primary and subsequent diagnosis when multiple diagnoses are present.
Perform qualitative analysis of the records to ensure accuracy, internal consistency, and correlation of recorded data and assigned codes.
Contact appropriate medical staff members to rectify inconsistencies, deficiencies and discrepancies in medical documentation.
Reference Military Health System (MHS) Coding Guidelines, as well as many other guidelines to ensure accurate coding of medical records.

Requirements
Conditions of Employment

You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship.
Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
Two year trial/probationary period may be required.
Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Certification
: A current, active, and valid Coding Certification from the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) or American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes coding medical diagnoses and reviewing medical records for accuracy. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone-no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

This position may be scheduled to transfer to the Defense Health Agency (DHA) at a date to be determined in accordance with the provisions of Section 702 of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2017, Public Law 114-328. The Act directed the DHA to take responsibility for the administration (i.e., authority, direction, and control) of military treatment facilities beginning 1 Oct 18. Employees will become DoD employees upon transfer to the DHA.
Statutory return rights for current DoD employees are applicable in many circumstances.
