POSITION SUMMARY:
As a valued team member of the Department of Parks and Recreation, the Naturalist serves as the leader of the Peace Valley Nature Center including grounds, facilities, and trails. Primary responsibilities include the planning and direction of the delivery system for environmental education programs for the nature center. This position reports to the Executive Director, Parks and Recreation.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Trains, supervises and mentors the Assistant Naturalist, seasonal and volunteer staff members in effectively carrying out nature educational programs.
Manages the nature center’s lands, buildings and trails.
Coordinate programs including lectures with local schools/school districts; conducts workshops; provides field experiences, guided tours and adult education courses; and plans and conducts family field trips.
Serves as editor for the nature center newsletter.
Conducts related children’s clubs and naturalist in-service training programs for students/adults.
Serves as the primary liaison between the County and the Friends of Peace Valley Nature Center.
Establishes interpretative displays within the center’s museum and on the grounds.
Prepares and issues reports as required.
Coordinates research projects on flora/fauna.
Orients public uses of building/land as to appropriate use of resources.
Participates in local/regional professional seminars.
Provides technical assistance to public/general community concerning environmental educational programs such as care of injured animals, program suggestions, etc.
Performs similar or related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Bachelor’s Degree in environmental or outdoor education, biology, botany, conservation, park/recreation or related field.
Minimum of 3 years’ experience working directly in outdoor education setting, both in land/facility management, public programming, volunteer coordination.
Proven skills teaching in formal and informal settings to diverse audiences.
Working knowledge of educational program design and assessments.
Ability to think strategically and creatively.
Excellent attention to detail.
Highly motivated.
Ability to maintain professional, positive, welcoming, and friendly working relationship with general public, volunteers, and local/regional community organizations and school groups.
Must possess a valid driver’s license and ability to provide reliable transportation.
Willing and able assist with loading/unloading/hauling equipment over moderate distances with or without accommodation.
Must be available for weekend and evening work as the job demands.
