Overview
The paralegal specialist is not like being a legal assistant, they are expected to provide legal/administrative support in all areas of criminal law, international law, civil/administrative law, contract law and fiscal law. They assist judges, Judge Advocates and unit commanders with a wide range of legal matters and judicial work.
Job Duties
Paralegal support to unit commanders and the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate
Provide legal documents in courts-martial, Article 15 actions and other military justice matters
Review line of duty determinations, AR 15-6 investigations, separation board proceedings and other administrative law matters
Assistance in family law such as power of attorney, wills and separation decrees
Requirements
18 years of age or older.
HS diploma or GED.
US Army is a drug-free organization; employees are subject to random drug tests.
Willing to submit to a background review.
Available to work in geographic area indicated.
Able to read, write and communicate (speak, hear and understand) English.
Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
Able to pass a physical screening
Possess a valid state-issued driver’s license.
Able to visually distinguish colors – red, blue, green, yellow; hear, and with training, distinguish auditory signals.
Training
Company-paid on-the-job training, including preparation, equipment and expenses. Training is 20 weeks.Some of the skills you will learn are:
Legal terminology and research techniques
Preparation of legal documents
Army judicial process
Interviewing witnesses
Helpful Skills
Ability to supervise those in a command
Provide technical guidance to subordinates
Maintain law/administrative library
Monitor and review actions for accuracy
Compensation
Total compensation includes monthly housing stipend, monthly food allowance, medical coverage, paid holidays, 30 days of paid vacation a year, and paid movement costs for any relocation.
Housing: A stipend allowance based on your location
Subsistence: Monthly food allowance
Medical: Full coverage for whole family at no cost to member
Vacation: 30 days paid
Relocation: Paid relocation costs
Holidays: Paid holidays
