Duties and Responsibilities

Assist in developing and implementing bridge and retention strategies for Ke Ala ‘Anu’u, a five-year Title lll cooperative grant between Leeward Community College (Leeward CC) and UH West O’ahu.
Under the supervision of the Ke Ala ?Anu?u Project Coordinator, provide direct, ongoing, and comprehensive assistance to Native Hawaiian transfer students (and prospective transfer students) in STEM and STEM-related majors in order to increase their transfer rates into Leeward Community College as well as persistence and graduation rates.
Reports to Leeward CC campus for work with project staff and coordinator and will also have a physical location at UH West O?ahu to support student transfers and grant initiative goals.
Coordinate with other project staff members to ensure that project participants receive continuous and appropriate support through a Hawaiian Culture Based Education (HCBE) framework.
Under the guidance and support of project staff, increase presence at UH West O?ahu and with community organizations by developing culturally appropriate messages (e.g. in-person presentations, websites, and social media) that help prospective Native Hawaiian students and their families set college and career goals.
Develop and implement activities at UH West O?ahu in collaboration with Leeward based staff that lay a strong foundation for career exploration, cultural enrichment, and financial literacy for program participants.
Collaborate with external partners (HIDOE and other educational, community and private and government organizations) to provide seamless guidance, mentorship and advising support to project participants.
Partner with various campus entities that share a commitment to fostering student success, and Native Hawaiian students in particular (e.g. No’eau Center, Naulu Center, VETS Empowered Through STEM, Academic Advising, and Student Life).
Develop and monitor an internet-based networking site for students.
Adhere to project timelines, project objectives, and performance measures related to grant goals.
Remain current on Title lll and U.S. Department of Education policies and grant terms and conditions to ensure that the project operates in full compliance throughout the period of federal support.
Evening, weekend, and off-campus assignments may arise periodically.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a baccalaureate degree in any field with coursework in Hawaiian Studies, Hawaiian Language, or Hawaiian-Pacific Studies and 0 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for providing educational services or assistance to students; or equivalent education/training or experience.
Functional knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in educational or cultural programs demonstrated by knowledge, understanding and ability to apply concepts, terminology.
Functional knowledge and understanding of principles, theories, federal and state laws, rules, regulations and systems associated with educational or cultural programs.
Demonstrated ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes and resolve the full range problems that may commonly occur in the educational or cultural programs.
Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, write reports and procedures, and communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team members and individuals from culturally diverse backgrounds, especially those from Native Hawaiian communities.
Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
Demonstrated ability to assess and evaluate student needs and design and deliver a responsive program or service.
Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.

Desirable Qualifications

Extensive knowledge of community, secondary, and post-secondary educational institutions.
Possession of a degree in a STEM or STEM related field and/or significant work experience in a STEM field.
Experience in providing direct services to communities in West O’ahu.
Experience in academic planning and educational programming/providing service to underrepresented students, including, but not limited to, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander students.
Skilled in working with diverse student populations that include at-risk, socio-economically disadvantaged, underrepresented, veteran, and/or non-traditional students.
Demonstrated experience with spreadsheets, database, social media and presentation applications.
