About the Opportunity:
The voyage photographer will be a ship-wide passenger resource for photography related questions and presentations as well being responsible for production of the End Of Voyage Slideshow. The photographer will assist the expedition team in other areas as needed, while keeping primary focus on passenger assistance.
Primary Task: Photographing guests, nature, and activities.
Secondary Task: Lecturing and socializing with guests.
About the Candidate: This person will be adaptable, dynamic, and embody American Queen Voyages’ RESPECT Service System.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Help the guests tell the story of their voyage.
Assists and reports to the Expedition Leader as needed and requested.
Prepares and delivers 2-3 lectures about photography, i.e. Intro to Expedition Photography, How to Photograph Wildlife, Photography with Smartphones, How to Edit, etc.
Higher responsibility than the rest of the team to socialize with guests.
Responsible for uploading slideshow, activity and nature photos, and guests-in-action photos after each voyage.
Prepares and delivers slideshow for guests towards the end of the voyage.
Is part of the ET team and the tasks on board (see Tasks on Board).
The voyage photographer will:
Acknowledge that photographs taken while employed on AQV voyages are the property of American Queen Voyages.
Be available to all passengers to teach and assist with their individual photography needs. Confirm all guests have signed AQV Photographic Consent Forms. Note if any guests do not want their photo taken and included in the slideshow, create a list of the photo non consent guests and make it available to the E-team.
Photograph and document all aspects of life aboard the ship, each expedition activity, zodiac cruising, kayaking, hands-on-science, town visits, cultural experiences and sightings of wildlife/landscapes/seascapes.
Be a positive force for teaching all passengers proper and responsible photography practices in British Colombia and Alaska’s Inside Passage.
Offer organized learning opportunities frequently, including short 10 to 20 min in the field lessons during activities, skill building on deck, how to shoot portraits, critiquing work, and short 5 min “Tips and tricks” offered at nightly recaps. One on one post processing assistance is not your role – but could be a topic for a short lesson. Accessibility is the mission.
Completion of a sequential end of voyage slideshow to be shown on the final day of the trip. Images should use a simple fade dissolve at 3-4sec intervals. Title slide and voyage map should be used with including voyage details and AQV logo. Voyage slideshow should include 200+ best images taken by photographer on the trip. Special attention placed on the people and place, showcasing the passengers in the environment and the AQV brand. Nature and landscape photography is encouraged and valued but not focus of this role. ALL material will be available for use in passenger keepsake USB, with possible additional use for AQV marketing and social media.
Produce photographic record of voyage with an emphasis on capturing participation and enjoyment of passengers during highlights and varied events. Production of complimentary trip specific “Passenger Voyage USB” at voyage end. Must include Voyage Slideshow, individual images with minimum 250kb file size (w small subtle AQV/photographer watermark), other voyage materials provided by team. May include short HD video clips, passenger art/writings, etc.)
Include other trip specific materials provided by expedition team (map/log/species lists/etc.) to passenger keepsake USB drive. With assistance of other staff, copy complete collection of ALL files for distribution to all passengers (one per couple).
You will be encouraged to capture HD video with either personal gear or provided video capable cameras. Video may be used for passenger keepsake USB if time to compile it in a professional way (ask other exp staff for assistance). Use of HD video for AQV marketing and social media.
Assistance with all other aspects of the expedition as deemed appropriate by the expedition leader to improve the programing and operations. May include: assisting with program, boot, log, lifejacket distribution, landing duties as required (boat driving/catching, gangway, shore supervision)
Work with AQV marketing and sales to capture requested photos needed for promotion purposes. Work with the expedition team and home office to continually improve the program.
For all trips worked, a post-trip report and high resolution copies of trip images/videos must be submitted to the Expedition Manager within 4 weeks of completing the contract/voyage.
Ship Related Responsibilities
Pass a practical and verbal evaluation for basic guiding skills, local natural history knowledge. The ability and willingness to give hands-on, relevant, interesting, and factual interpretation on natural history, local geology, wildlife, flora and fauna, First Nations, Alaska trivia, environmental concerns, etc. which will be shared with guests in the field, on the water, and on the vessel.
Assist in logistics of all land operations, transportation buses, walks, hikes, and vendor activities. Part of this duty is to enrich the guests’ experience and engage them in friendly conversation throughout the trip.
Assist in general tasks including loading stores and luggage.
Assist the Expedition Leader with various excursion and educational needs, as deemed necessary.
Fully participate with a positive attitude in all job-related aspects, including attendance and partaking in all guide meetings, debriefs, and other pre/post-trip tasks.
Ability to work cohesively in the sustained company of guests and crew, on and off the vessel, with heavy emphasis on communication and teamwork. Communicate appropriately with co-workers, owners, and managers and address conflict or other outstanding issues in a timely and professional manner.
Always maintain a professional demeanor and appearance among guests and crew as an AQV Brand Ambassador.
Follow company values in responding to others in a polite and helpful manner that makes them feel valued, respected, liked, and cared for.
Be a RESPECT Service System example for others.
Act as a good steward of the natural world, including following AQV’s sustainability practices and Leave No Trace principles.

Requirements & Qualifications:
The voyage photographer will be skilled in:
Teaching/ presentations / public speaking
Professional photography skills and knowledge for all levels of photographers, beginners to advanced
Maintaining and presenting a positive and upbeat persona
Ability to use independent judgement to make quick decisions in a dynamic environment while focusing on safety in all situations.
Ability to interpret various environmental/education materials including maps, charts, guidebooks, etc.
Must have a positive, supportive team player and can-do attitude.
Excellent verbal communication skills. Must be fluent in English.
Previous experience working in guest services or group leadership.
Previous involvement with oral presentations given to large groups.
Willing and eager to interact positively with a range of age groups, from small children to seniors.
Strong work ethic and willingness to learn, accept new ideas and be able to take direction.
Excellent judgment, decision making and creative problem-solving ability in a fast-paced dynamic environment.
Ability to comply with AQV’s drug and alcohol policy, which includes alcohol and drug testing as mandated by the USCG including but not limited to pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion, and post-accident/incident testing.
Comply with company Covid-19 (SARS-COV-2) policy and protocols, including testing and vaccination per policy prior to starting employment.
Must be at least 21 years of age.
Professional Certification(s) or License:
CPR and a valid Wilderness First Aid and/or ability to obtain and maintain.
Preferred:
Small cruise ship industry experience strongly preferred.
Academic or professional background or equivalent experience in natural science, Alaskan history, environmental education, wildlife, or conservation related field preferred.
Working Conditions:
Most of the work is performed in a Marine environment in both indoor and outdoor conditions with exposure to various temperatures and weather conditions, along with a moderate to loud noise level. The Marine operation is subject to varied wake and motion. Positions both live and work onboard the vessel for consecutive port-to-port voyages during the regular season.
Physically able to work long hours; lift/carry/push/pull kayaks and other heavy objects; and repeatedly lift upwards of 50lbs regularly.
Ability to stand and walk on nearly a constant basis; bend, rotate and reach frequently; ascend/descend stairs or ladders safely; manipulate/handle/grip materials required to perform job; maneuver through/in/around small and/or confined areas within the vessel.
Additional requirements may be required depending on the physical needs of the role
