Job Duties
Ohio Department of Public Safety – Ohio State Highway Patrol
Report in Location: 1583 Alum Creek Drive, Colmbus, Ohio 43207
Work Hours: 8:00 AM to 4:45 PM (Subject to Call)
Performs analytical testing on crime-related evidence provided by law enforcement officers; Performs analysis on drugs, urine, blood, physical evidence, etc.; Evaluates data & develops opinions based on knowledge, skills & sound analytical processes.
Provides court testimony as an expert witness; Provides court support for law enforcement officers; Assists & trains officers in crime laboratory techniques & analytical methods; Maintains & orders necessary chemicals, containers & supplies used in the crime laboratory.
Prepares laboratory reports for use by law enforcement officers & appropriate courts of law; Researches & interprets current literature concerning trends & changes in laws as applied to crime laboratory analytical methods; Prepares management reports concerning crime laboratory operations & results; Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications
Completion of undergraduate core program in forensic science, biology or chemistry with coursework to include forensic science, analytical chemistry & law enforcement; 1 yr. pertinent laboratory experience commensurate with job duties to be performed as outlined per approved position description on file; valid driver’s license.
Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment noted above.

Knowledge of: Safety Practices (i.e., laboratory safety practices); *Agency Policies & Procedures (e.g., standard operating procedures, guidelines & standard methods applicable to Highway Patrol Crime Laboratory); Natural Sciences (i.e., chemistry, chemical analyses, biology & physics); *Employee Development; Government Structure & Process (Ohio Department of Public Safety, Ohio State Highway Patrol); Law (federal); Inventory Control.
Skill in: Equipment Operations (e.g., use & operation of laboratory equipment such as gas chromatograph, mass spectrometry, infrared spectrophotometry, computer keyboard with video display terminal microscope techniques & all other laboratory equipment).
Ability to: Understand somewhat abstract field of study (e. g., physics, chemistry, math); Add, subtract, multiply & divide whole numbers; Prepare meaningful, concise & accurate reports; Gather, collate & classify information about data, people or things; Handle sensitive inquiries from & contacts with officials & general public; PHYSICAL: DEMONSTRATE DEXTERITY TO (use hands & fingers to operate laboratory equipment such as gas chromatograph, mass spectrometry, infrared spectrophotometry & all other laboratory equipment to test & research, toxicology & blood borne pathogen specimens); Work alone on most tasks.

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT REQUIRED TO REMAIN IN THE CLASSIFICATION AFTER EMPLOYMENT
For positions in Ohio State Highway Patrol – Toxicology section only, must obtain Ohio Department of Health licensure & certification per OAC 3701-53-07 within twelve (12) months of employment, when required. Failure to obtain &/or maintain licensure & certification, when required is cause for removal.
UNUSUAL WORKING CONDITIONS
Exposed to hazardous chemicals; may be exposed to human body parts; may be exposed to explosives; may be exposed to bio-hazardous materials (e.g., blood, urine); requires travel; may be on-call 24 hours/day, 7 days a week.
This position may be filled by a layoff or certification eligibility list.
This position will be filled in accordance with the bargaining agreement if applicable.
Background Check Information
A BCI and FBI fingerprint check, a background check, including a polygraph examination, may be required on all selected applicants.
