Interns will assist with field and oce work specifically related to federally designated wilderness areas. In addition interns will help with wilderness monitoring, wilderness trail work, and update wilderness records. Other duties include assisting a wilderness kayak ranger for up to 10 days in the field to collect data and also assist with other duties associated with the Petersburg Ranger District Recreation program. This position takes place predominately outdoors, in a cool and wet environment.
Compensation amounts:
$1,500 – RT travel allowance to work site and back
$280 – weekly living allowance
$200 – PPE boot stipend
$1,500 – duty related travel/per diem
AmeriCorps eligibility (Education award of $2,360)

Conditions of Employment:
Beginning on 1/18/22, all new SCA volunteer program participants are required to be fully vaccinated. Full vaccination is defined as having received a booster shot six months after the Pfizer and Moderna primary series and two months after the Johnson & Johnson primary series.
Location Description
Petersburg Ranger District, located in southeast Alaska on the Tongass National Forest.
Training Provided
Wilderness Awareness Training will be provided. Training will also be available for traditional tools including basic axe skills, crosscut saw and Pulaski.
Kayak training will be provided and Leave No Trace camping practices.
Educational/Recreational Opportunities
The intern will have the opportunity to learn about management of federally designated wilderness areas. The intern will have the opportunity to learn about the local ora and fauna. Recreation activities include kayaking, hiking and camping.
