ODNR owns and manages state parks, state forests, state nature preserves and wildlife areas. We license all hunting, fishing and watercraft; oversee and permit all mineral extraction, monitor dam safety, manage water resources and serve as the second largest Law Enforcement presence in the State of Ohio.
We are accepting applications for a Wildlife Communications Specialist within the Division of Wildlife, headquartered at the District 2 Office, assigned to Hancock county. What you will do…
Conducts wildlife education and information programs on hunting, fishing, trapping, wildlife identification, endangered species and other wildlife conservation topics (e.g., assists in development of wildlife curriculum for use by educators);
Presents interpretive programs and conducts interpretive workshops for educators; develops and presents educational displays, materials programs and speeches and provides preliminary contact with public in person and through educational and conservation organizations;
Writes, processes, edits and performs computer layout work on fliers, articles and wildlife educational publications; researches information and issues news releases about wildlife issues and conservation on a regular basis;
Consults with division personnel concerning need for educational materials; schedules and conducts educational programs and events;
Responds to inquiries (e.g., telephone, e-mail, US mail); takes orders for materials and publications from public;
Maintains inventories (e.g., publications, audio visual equipment and displays); takes digital photographs for use on educational displays or in power point programs; assists with video production;
Performs wildlife nuisance control; euthanizes injured animals; assists with Hunter Safety Classes.

Qualifications
Completion of undergraduate core program in wildlife education or fish and/or wildlife management; 6 months training or 6 months experience in wildlife education or fish and/or wildlife management; 1 course or 3 moths experience in public relations.
Or 24 months training or 24 months experience in wildlife education or fish and/or wildlife management; 1 course or 3 months experience in public relations.
Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above.
Knowledge of: outdoor skills; project wild facilitator training; hunter education certification; budgeting; inventory control; safety practices (wildlife safety, care and handling of animals, poisonous plants and animals, firearms safety); public relations; agency policies and procedures (department, division)*; government structure and process (state and federal, wildlife rules and regulations)*; natural sciences (fish and wildlife management, wildlife education).
Skilled in: word processing (Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook, and photographic editing software); equipment operation (personal computer, camera, slide and video projector, laptop, projection unit, general office equipment, archery trailer, vehicle).
Ability to: recognize unusual or threatening conditions and take appropriate action; deal with problems involving several variables in familiar context; add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers; maintains accurate records; prepare and deliver speeches and lecture on wildlife education before specialized audiences and general public; gather, collate and classify information about data, people or things; cooperates with co-workers on group projects; handle sensitive inquiries from and contacts with officials and general public.
