The Department of Labor and Workforce Development, Division of Workers’ Compensation, is recruiting for a Chief of Workers’ Compensation Adjudication located in Anchorage!
The position is partially exempt (PX) at a range 25.
What you will be doing:
Under general direction of the Director of the Division of Workers’ Compensation (Division), the chief of Workers’ Compensation Adjudications (Chief) is primarily responsible for the coordination and execution of prehearings, hearings, and mediations under the statewide workers’ compensation adjudication program. The Chief also assists the Director with legal analysis, composing statutory and regulatory drafts, developing and implementing policies and procedures, establishing performance objectives and measurements, and developing short and long-term goals for the program. The Chief serves as the primary legal and technical advisor to workers’ compensation officers and hearing officers, and may hear or mediate the most complex cases characterized by a lack of clear precedent, difficult proceeding, unique legal or policy issues, or cases with the potential for significant legal ramifications.
This position may represent the director at public hearings or other agency functions and may act for the director in his/her absence, or when this authority has been specifically delegated. It also has supervisory responsibility for the exercise of independent judgment in employing, promoting, transferring, disciplining, or adjudicating grievances of subordinates.

To be successful in the position a candidate will need the following core competencies:
Occupational Knowledge: Basic understanding of the Alaska Workers’ Compensation Act, applicable regulations and statutes, and judicial interpretations of these laws; Experience identifying legal issues and clearly articulating those issues in written legal documents; Experience drafting decisions and orders appealable to a higher judicial authority.
Interpersonal Effectiveness: Ability to exercise professionalism, even when dealing with angry and sometimes hostile individuals.
Leadership: Influences, motivates, and challenges others; adapts leadership styles to a variety of situations.
Objectivity: Ability to conduct proceedings and make decisions in an unbiased and impartial manner.

A member in good standing of the Alaska Bar Association. AND Substantial experience in the practice of Workers’ Compensation law in Alaska.
