Job Description : CoF FSWCD Community Gardens Summer Associate

The Fairbanks Soil and Water Conservation District Summer Associate will assist with the development of the community garden at the Fairbanks Food Bank Clubhouse and our ongoing Community Hydroponic Farm Project which is a USDA/NIFA grant funded program. The produce from these projects will support the HELP program at the Fairbanks Community Food Bank which provides services for medically referred clients. Activities include assisting with presentations about gardening practices and nutrition, continuing development of existing community gardens in South Fairbanks and increasing community involvement with sustainable gardening. The AmeriCorps VISTA program in Fairbanks is housed through the City of Fairbanks (CoF). Summer Associates serve for 10-weeks helping local organizations meet their needs through direct or indirect service. Summer Associates work 40 hours per week and in Fairbanks, receive a monthly living allowance of $1,314 which is paid bi-weekly. At the end of a successful 10-week service term, they also have the choice between an education award of $1,342 or a cash stipend of $345.

Member Duties : The FSWCD SA will develop three urban community gardens and use the produce to augment organizations serving food insecure communities and individuals. Activities include: 1.Consider alternate ways to improve safety, accuracy and efficiency in the garden before, during and after the gardening season 2.Promote sustainable gardening opportunities to the community by creating an example for future community gardens 3.Assist in harvesting and processing finished products 4.Aid in distribution of produce to organizations within FSWCD’s outreach 5. Work with gardens that provide food for the Fairbanks Community Food Bank to redistribute to needy families 6. Use produce from the garden to augment the JP Jones Community Development Center summer youth program and the Fairbanks Community Food Bank 8. Educate the public about gardening practices and plant needs/nutrients 9. Attend local community meetings with supervisor to promote FSWCD and its projects
