Join a member-driven generation and distribution utility serving residents in 58 locations throughout rural Alaska with its headquarters in Anchorage, AK. The communities that Alaska Village Electric Cooperative serves receive power via small, isolated grids that utilize diesel generation and renewable sources. AVEC serves the rural Alaska communities with 11,513 meters, 515 miles of distribution line.
Benefits and Pay
Hourly rate based on experience
1,000 Hour/Seasonal/Apprentice Hire (with possibility of full time) – Wage Range $21.02-$30.02
Lineman 1 – Wage Range $27.24-$39.29
Lineman 2 – Wage Range $33.02-$48.08

The lineman will be part of the distribution team at AVEC. This team is under the Operations department and manages and performs the construction work on-site required to serve member villages with electrical energy. What sets apart AVEC apart is the experiences it has to offer. This position presents the opportunity to explore Alaska and enjoy world class fishing and hunting during the hours that you aren’t working and see parts of Alaska that most Alaskans don’t even get to see.
As a Lineman you will:
Install and retires power distribution systems.
Correct operational problems and performs preventive maintenance and repair on distribution systems and diesel plants (if possible) while on construction projects or as assigned.
Instruct additional labor on proper use of all equipment, materials, handling of cable, and safe work practices.
Comply with all aspects of the OSHA standards
Work in a safe manner and insures the property of others or other Cooperative equipment is not damaged.
To be successful, you will need:
To be at least 18 years of age.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Lineman school, required.
To be insurable by the Cooperative’s insurance company at standard rates and individual must be willing to consent to release of information regarding their driving record on an annual basis.
To travel to remote Alaska, as required.
Skills and Abilities
Reliable, dependable and capable of working with minimum supervision.
Knowledgeable about safety rules and requirements for the trade.
Possess and exhibit the ability and desire to provide prompt, courteous and reliable services to the Cooperative’s internal and external customers.
Ability to work with multicultural and multilingual consumers and individuals requiring patience and a calm demeanor.
Self-motivated with the ability to prioritize multiple conflicting priorities and projects.
Excellent communication skills, ability to communicate clearly and accurately orally and in writing.

Resourceful in using available and makeshift equipment and in facing rough terrain and adverse weather conditions.
Ability to multitask and manage multiple projects simultaneously. Adapts to change quickly and easily.

Works to build a sense of common purpose across all work groups, fosters team building and a positive work ethic.

Work Environment
May be exposed to adverse weather conditions, cold and icy conditions.
Travel, work and reside in remote locations requiring travel by boat, small plane, ATV and by foot.
Working with and around high voltage power lines.
Use of personal protective equipment required.
Physical Effort
Sitting, bending, climbing stairs and ladders.
Climbing poles.
Heavy lifting up to 70lbs.
Reaching, extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
Frequent use of hands and fingers and/or handles tools.
