This position is currently undergoing review as part of the Legal Support Staff Study and therefore the title and/or pay range currently assigned may be subject to change upon implementation of this class study.

The Law Office Assistant 1 is a clerical support position with the Utqiagvik District Attorney’s Office. The Law Office Assistant performs entry-level LOA work, in support of the organizational needs.

The mission of all Alaska district attorney offices is to seek justice, promote public safety and public respect for government through prompt, effective, and compassionate prosecution of cases in a manner that advocates for the interests of all victims, respects the law enforcement agencies, responsibly stewards public resources and holds offenders accountable while at the same time protecting the constitutional and legal rights of the accused. This would be a rewarding job for someone who understands how important the criminal justice system is to the health of a community and would like to have the satisfaction of being a part of that process.

In this position you would be joining the administrative support team that supports prosecutors’ efforts to hold offenders accountable for committing crime. This is an interesting and challenging position that is vital to the success of the office. It includes a wide variety of duties and never a dull moment.

This position is located at the Utqiagvik District Attorney’s Office at 1250 Agvik St. The hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM. You will work with 2 attorneys, and 1 paralegal.

The applicant will need to be comfortable working with common office equipment, computers, and software and be able to efficiently perform administrative duties and keep processes moving in a fast-paced office. The applicant will also need to be able to stay calm, professional, and focused while maintaining a high level of accuracy while working under frequent deadlines, interruptions and changing priorities.

Additional Information:

The Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN) is utilized in this position. A background check and fingerprinting will be required.
Applicants should be aware that due to the nature of the work being performed in this office, the incumbent must have the ability to tolerate some exposure to graphic pictures, coarse language, and detailed descriptions of sometimes horrific criminal acts.
The incumbent must maintain the strictest of confidences with information they will be exposed to and have access to.

Minimum Qualifications

One year of experience that includes clerical tasks (such as preparing correspondence or reports, filing, entering data, receiving payments, or maintaining logs) and frequent contacts requiring professionalism (such as with clients, professionals, business representatives, managers, etc.). Substitutions: Post-secondary education from an accredited college may substitute for the required experience (3 semester hours/4 quarter hours equal one month). Vocational-Technical Certification in a business support career area (such as administrative office technology, business and marketing management, entrepreneurship, office assistant, etc.) or legal support career area (such as paralegal, legal assistant, legal secretary, criminal justice, etc.) may substitute for the required experience. Special Note: Most positions require incumbents to be able to obtain a Notary Public Bond and to be able to pass a criminal background check to meet security requirements for using criminal record networks such as APSIN and NCIC/NLETS. If this requirement is present, it will be stated in the vacancy announcement. Some positions are required to work regular overtime on weekends and/or holidays to provide support to the assigned duty attorney. If this requirement is present, it will be stated in the vacancy announcement and in the Position Description.

APSIN
Please be aware – this position requires the use of the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN). A security clearance issued by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) is necessary to use APSIN. DPS will deny security clearance for any applicant who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor in this state or another jurisdiction, or who may be a fugitive from justice. Additionally, security clearance will be withdrawn if DPS discovers that material information was falsified or omitted at the time of the initial application for security clearance.

SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONS

It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.
