Job Description : The Brigham Young University Security Department is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. This is done by coordinating efforts with entities such as, the university administration, risk management, emergency management, EMS, law enforcement, Title IX, CAPS, events, and housing. Security serves the campus community by teaching others how to protect themselves and their property, detecting crime, eliminating hazards, treating others with dignity and respect, and enhancing service through the personal and professional development of department employees.
The Security Specialist’s primary responsibility is to ensure the safety of the campus community by protecting life and property and to assist in overseeing all security functions. These duties include patrol functions, security booths, adherence to all policies and procedures, proper care and up-keep of vehicles and equipment, reviewing reports and making timely notifications up the chain of command.
The Security Specialist is required to work in various locations both indoors and outside. Additional Comments
The university community poses unique challenges and situations for the security specialists. Even though the university is considered a safe environment, the very nature of security work periodically places an officer in uncomfortable and potentially volatile situations. In addition to the demands of the university and the inherent challenges of security, officers may experience adverse effects on their mental health, family life, and overall social life. The security specialist is constantly responding to calls for service and therefore must be well versed in conflict management, first aid, policy, and procedures.
