The Prince William County Department of Social Services is seeking a highly motivated person to fill a Detention Specialist position at the Molinari Juvenile Shelter in Manassas, Virginia. The Molinari Juvenile Shelter is a short-term residential program for boys and girls ages 10 to 17 who are in crisis and need temporary placement. ABOUT THIS ROLE
The Detention Specialist acts as a counselor and leader to youth on all aspects of behavior management and daily living skills. Typical duties include the following:
Supervise youth in their hygiene, chores, mealtime, recreation, and educational activities;
lead regular group meetings on topics such as anger management, job readiness skills and interpersonal communications;
participate in, and periodically lead, family partnership meetings that include youth, their families and representatives of outside agencies such as social services, attorneys, probation officers and schools; and
process admissions and discharges and maintain records, while always being prepared to solve problems “on the spot” and de-escalate crisis situations.
PREFERENCES
We require a high school diploma or G.E.D. and 1 year or related experience. A Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Social Work, Human Services or related; and experience in the following areas is preferred:
Work with at-risk youth in a residential setting with emphasis on managing dorm-life activities;
Experience providing crisis intervention counseling and resolving problems with at-risk youth;
Extensive knowledge and experience with implementing positive behavioral modification methods;
Bilingual English/Spanish
Ability to respond to conflict situations that may involve using physical restraint technique.
SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS
Rotating shifts for a 24-hour facility. 12-hour shifts: Day 7 am – 7 pm or Night 7 pm – 7 am
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
All candidates must pass a pre-employment physical before a final offer will be extended in accordance with Department of Juvenile Justice regulations. All DSS staff members are required to provide emergency human services work in the event of an emergency disaster.
STARTING SALARY RANGE: $22.01 – $33.02/hr.
