The Scripps Communications team is currently working in a hybrid model, reporting into the office a set number of days with the option to work -from-home on select days.
DESCRIPTION
UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography is one of the most important centers for global earth science research and education in the world. Scripps scientists work to understand and protect the planet by investigating our oceans, Earth and atmosphere to find solutions to our greatest environmental challenges. Scripps leads research in climate change impacts and adaptation, resilience to hazards, conservation and biodiversity, oceans and human health, national security, and in developing innovative technology to observe the planet.
The communications office at Scripps Institution of Oceanography aims to elevate the reputation of Scripps as a leading institution, highlighting the institution’s breadth, excellence, and global impact, while amplifying its connection to UC San Diego. The team also creates communications that aid in the recruitment and retention of outstanding and diverse students, faculty and staff.
The Social Media Specialist contributes to and implements a comprehensive communications strategy across Scripps Institution of Oceanography’s social media channels (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, TikTok) to increase awareness for the institution’s research, education, and global impact. Working closely with Scripps and University Communications colleagues, this position will plan and develop content to manage, maintain, and grow our social media channels.
The Social Media Specialist is responsible for the daily posting of news, content and campaigns on the institution’s social channels, maintaining a cross-channel content calendar, posting the right content at the right time and platform to maximize engagement. This position builds and nurtures online communities, actively engages with users, and implements processes and procedures to regularly test, analyze and improve digital engagement.
The specialist is an expert when it comes to the latest social platforms, tools and technologies. They drive social media efforts, stay on the leading-edge of trends and technologies, are creative content creators, and advocate for new approaches that advance communications objectives. As a member of the communications team, the specialist also possesses excellent writing skills to translate scientific concepts in an engaging way.
QUALIFICATIONS
Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of design and user experience, including skill to design in an appealing, lively and relevant way. Thorough expertise and proficiency in digital media content creation and administration. Demonstrated experience developing creative, engaging, strategic content across a variety of social media platforms. Prior professional experience working on behalf of a brand or agency. Understanding of social algorithms for each platform. Keen knowledge of digital media trends and best practices.
Excellent writing, communication, and grammar skills. Demonstrated experience translating complex subjects into compelling social media content. Possesses sound news judgement, and understands the power of social media as a news-generating tool.
Thorough skills to create clear, easy-to-navigate, informative, accurate, well-designed, and functional web sites that provide web content consistent with the organization’s message and in keeping with management directives and client objectives. Demonstrated experience assessing digital media performance. Ability to draw insight from data and communicate recommendations to management.
Thorough understanding of organization’s processes, procedures, and applicable rules and regulations for web communications. Knowledge of effective storytelling principles and ability to write succinct, evocative and engaging digital media posts.
Knowledge of the location, its achievements, mission, vision, goals and objectives. Demonstrated interest in and affinity for environmental science and climate change communications.
Interest and commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, and using digital communications to contribute to achieving EDI goals.
Thorough understanding of technical language and requirements of the assigned work. Extensive skills in audience targeting, and experience with generating organic growth.
Thorough technical skills in computer applications for web production, image handling, publishing and design, illustration, presentation preparation, animation, web interaction, and / or other state-of-the-art web communication capabilities. Demonstrated experience utilizing content management systems and / or relevant web applications used for production and website development. Experience with Google suite, Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, SproutSocial and other business and digital media tools.
Thorough interpersonal communication skills.
Thorough knowledge of content management systems and / or relevant web applications used for web production and organization-specific computer application programs.
Thorough skills to develop and implement original ideas and correctly identify and effectively solve problems.
