Full Time/Part Time: Part Time – Full Time Equivalency: 75%
Temporary/Permanent: Permanent
Other Conditions: To begin by June 2022 or as mutually agreeable. This is a permanent, non-tenure track position that is funded 50% by State-University funds, 25% by SOEST (college) funds, and is subject to satisfactory performance. The incumbent may obtain 25% of their annual salary via extramural research funds to augment the 75% State-University and school support up to 100% FTE (full time equivalent).
Duties and Responsibilities
The Faculty Specialist is a researcher, responsible for managing the SOEST electron microprobe lab. Position duties include the following.
Maintain a JEOL JXA-8500F field-emission gun electron microprobe with EDS and related support equipment at high performance levels, including routine maintenance and troubleshooting
Manage all aspects of the laboratory including recharge account and purchasing supplies for the lab
Oversee the use of the lab by others
Teach a graduate level course in Electron Microprobe Analysis
Train new users of the electron microprobe
Participate in research projects utilizing this microprobe
Publish peer-reviewed scientific journal articles, seek extramural funding independently or in collaboration with other scientists
Assist with compliance to UH safety protocols
Maintain rock preparation equipment including rock saw, oven, rock crushing and powdering equipment
Assistant Specialist (S3) Minimum Qualifications
1. Master’s degree in Geoscience or related fields, plus 30 credits of graduate study in a field relevant to the position
2. Experience in the management and maintenance of an electron microprobe lab
3. Experience repairing electrical and mechanical equipment
4. Experience in software development and computer programming
5. Ability to handle sensitive devices and equipment
6. Experience as PI of an extramurally-funded project related to the microprobe lab
7. Ability to generate independent research reports, publications, and grant proposals
Desirable Qualifications
1. Ph.D. in a related field
2. Interest in learning, using and developing new analytical techniques involving the microprobe
3. Demonstrated record of an independent research program
4. Ability in quantitative and verbal expression
5. Ability in procurement and management of lab accounts
6. Teamwork and team building abilities and strong interpersonal skills
7. Experience developing research projects with major lab users
8. Experience in personnel management
9. Strong oral and written communication skills
