Harborview Medical Center’s 5WA PSYCH MENTAL HEALTH Unit has an outstanding opportunity for a part-time, 90% FTE (36 hours per week), day shift, MENTAL HEALTH SPECIALIST 2. Under the supervision of a RN, the Mental Health Specialist 2 utilizes a variety of advanced clinical/psycho-therapeutic skills to contribute to bio-psycho-social patient assessment, and to collaborate with interdisciplinary treatment team members in planning, implementing and documenting care from admission to discharge for psychiatric patients from a variety of cultural backgrounds. Participates in unit and departmental activities to promote delivery of quality patient care, effective problem solving and communication, and continued clinical development.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Contributes to and documents initial and ongoing bio-psychosocial patient evaluations and assessments

Contributes to development and revision of written plan of care

Implements agreed-upon plan of care

Leads therapeutic patient group sessions

Provides training and instruction in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to staff, patients

Performs basic physical care and other tasks delegated by RN’s

Recognizes and communicates abnormal findings to RN’s

Recognizes and communicates observations related to effects and side effects of medications and signs of substance intoxication or withdrawal

Mentors and trains new staff regarding unit protocols, procedures and processes

Provides information on Involuntary Treatment Act to patient and family

Delivers notices to patients regarding court procedures and treatment and assists patients in completing paperwork from the court

Provides patient/family education regarding patient’s disposition

Incorporates discharge planning into patient care

Documents care using the computerized medical record

Assists in maintaining safe, therapeutic milieu and reduces safety hazards for patients

May contribute to research through interaction with psychiatric interns, nursing students or researchers

Stocks and organizes work area

Performs related duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor’s Degree AND one year as a Mental Health Specialist I, or equivalent. Experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

LEGAL REQUIREMENTS:

Current WA State Nursing Assistant Registration

Active WA State Affiliated Agency Counseling Certification within 60 days of hire

DESIRED:

Education, skills and experience with Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral therapies
