Job Description : Legal Assistant, Seattle OfficeMarten Law is seeking a well-rounded legal assistant to work with the attorneys and staff to support our growing environmental and energy law practice.A successful applicant must reside in or near, or be willing to relocate to, Seattle. Multiple in-office days each week at the Firm’s Office overlooking the Puget Sound in downtown Seattle will be mandatory.Firm OverviewMarten enjoys a national reputation as a leader in environmental, energy, and natural resource law. Our team of lawyers includes recognized authorities in climate change, wind and solar development, air quality, water resources and water quality, endangered species, forestry, public lands, fisheries, environmental cleanup, and environmental and energy project review and permitting. We work throughout the United States on large-scale projects involving complex negotiations, transactions, and litigation. Our lawyers practice out of offices Seattle, Washington; Portland, Oregon; Washington, D.C.; and Boston, Massachusetts.This position includes managing the work product of busy, committed lawyers performing complex work across the country. Working with your assigned attorneys, you will edit and e-file pleadings (experience with ECF in federal court preferred); maintain electronic and paper files; arrange depositions and coordinate process service; maintain a busy docket; prepare deposition exhibits; summarize depositions; prepare physical and electronic materials for depositions, hearings and trials; schedule meetings and case events; and prepare correspondence (for example, formal emails, letters, and memoranda).This is a permanent, full-time position with exceptional benefits, a competitive salary, and a great work environment. We are looking for a smart, hard worker who has at least three years’ experience working in a law firm; local, state or federal attorneys’ office; state government’ environmental NGO; or environmental agency.Some of your specific responsibilities at Marten will include:Editing, proofreading, and finalizing formal court and discovery documents for service and/or filing.Filing pleadings, motions, responses, replies and other materials in federal and state courts. These will often be complicated and involve organizing and filing multiple declarations and exhibits in support, in accord with all applicable court-specific and electronic filing rules.Organizing and maintaining physical and electronic case files.Working with the firm’s paralegals and attorneys as an organized team.Providing litigation support in complex civil matters, including assisting attorneys in preparing for depositions, court appearances, arbitrations and mediations, trial, and administrative hearings in addition to attending hearings and trials as needed.Conducting general office administrative duties, including copying and scanning.Effectively organizing preparatory materials, both in paper and electronic format, for attorney use in meetings, presentations, hearings, and other settings.Preparing correspondence for both internal and external distribution.Communicating directly with clients both in-person and by telephone.Marten LLP will be a great fit if you:Have three years or more of prior law firm (or similar) experience, especially in the environmental field;Have a college degree;Have a demonstrated interest in the environmental field;Have a strong work ethic and a professional and positive attitude;Take pride in your work and deliver superior work product;Pay exceptional attention to detail and can multi-task in a fast-paced practice;Take initiative;Work well as a member of a team and can handle stress effectively; andAre proficient in Microsoft Office. Experience in other programs used in legal practice, including NetDocuments, LMS, Trial Director, and others is preferred but not required.You can expect the following hours and benefits:A full-time position, working Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be occasional off-hours work as case work demands.
