Position : Victim Advocate
Job Description : Description
Under the general supervision provided by the Criminal Investigations Division Sergeant, the purpose of the position is to provide various duties that directly or indirectly assist victims of crime through intervening actions, counseling and facilitating the use of services on behalf of victims. Performs other work as requested.
Examples of Duties
Provides direct services to victims; which may include information and referrals.
Advises victims about compensation and assists with the completion and submission of the application to the Bureau of Victim Compensation along with all documents and information related to the crime. Provides continual follow-up between the Bureau and the victim until determination of eligibility.
Acts a liaison between the Lauderhill Police Department and existing county services.
Available on-call to assist with ongoing crime scenes, hospitals, victim’s homes or other designated locations when a crime is reported to that requires victim services.
Available on -call for crisis intervention counseling.
Provides short-term supportive counseling.
Provides orientation to the courts and criminal process.
Assists victims with Restraining Orders and Ejectment Petitions; may accompany victims to court, line-ups and depositions.
Assists with completing the victims impact statements.
Tracks and records follow-up contacts with victims, as required by law and grant requirements.
Assists with completing and providing statistical information as needed.

Minimum Training and Experience
High school diploma or GED certificate; related Bachelors degree from an accredited college preferred but not required; plus at least two (2) years paid work experience in counseling, social work, crisis intervention or related field. which could include community services; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Special Requirement
Valid State of Florida Driver’s License

Marginal Functions
While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit members.
Assists in grant proposals and administering grants in relation to victim advocacy.
Reviews information regarding available grants to determine eligibility.
Maintains a current list of services.
Attends meetings and advises on topics pertaining to victim awareness.
Performs related duties as directed.
